Review: TRUE BLOOD – The Complete Fifth Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

true blood s5 blu

Returning for its fifth season, True Blood is HBO’s sexy, scary, wildly entertaining drama series from Oscar- and Emmy-winner Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) and based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. In addition to returning cast favorites – human/faerie waitress Sookie Stackhouse, her vampire suitors Bill Compton and Eric Northman, soul-searching pal Tara, shape-shifting boss Sam, rakish brother Jason, clairvoyant Lafayette and teen-vamp Jessica – Season 5 introduces a whole new wave of otherworldly characters. There’s Vampire Guardian Roman, president of the Vampire Authority, who wants co-existence between humans and vampires; vampire zealot Salome (yes, the Salome), intent on recreating the world in God’s vampyric image; Authority Chancellor Nora, who shares the same maker as Eric; werewolves J.D. and Martha, who want a reluctant Alcide to take his rightful place as packmaster; and many more. Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, True Blood Season 5 goes deep into the battle between the Vampire Authority and “vampire fundamentalists” – a political power play whose outcome could decide not only the fate of Sookie and her Bon Temps friends, but of all human existence.

TRUE BLOOD – The Complete Fifth Season has all kinds of crazy things going on but what’s new for the residents of Bon Temps. Bill and Eric are in over their heads and things get worse as the season goes on and in the finale Bill is looking rather evil and not himself. Tara is having a really hard time getting used to being a vampire and she’s really pissed at Sookie for this, poor Sookie still gets blamed for everything.  Pam almost takes on a weird motherly role for Tara and this was really fun to watch. You get to see a softer and more caring side of Pam this season that you haven’t witnessed before. Alcide just wants to belong to a pack but he has to go through hell doing so plus he has to deal with his father.  Poor Hoyt still can’t figure out who or what he wants to be and even though we don’t see too much of him what little screen time he’s given it is fun to watch. The fairies also return this season and they play a small part taking down Russell Edgington who seems to be indestructible, almost anyway – the fairies get a little help from Eric!

There’s also a mystery about Sookie and Jason’s parents that they begin to find out. There’s this figure that we get a sneak peek at that had something to do with their deaths and I’m sure this figure will be one of the big baddies in the upcoming sixth season. There is as much or more going on in season 5 than any previous season and it’s all really exciting. What’s cool is each main character has their own story and adventure going on throughout the season and with as many characters as True Blood has that has to be hard to do but they pull it off with flying colors. We even get to see some old characters return either through flashbacks or resurrection. Vampires (ancient and modern), werewolves, demons, shape shifters, fairies, and corrupt politicians; True Blood season 5 has a little something for everyone!

The stories are still fun and I continue to enjoy these characters and their crazy lives. I also think that they added more humor in this season but nothing was overdone. There’s just some moments that really cracked me up, even when it looked like things would be getting so dark and then something funny would come out of nowhere.  There’s some cool action scenes and trademark special effects that we’re all used to seeing only on True Blood. This series still is one of the best shows on TV and doesn’t show any sign of slowing down.

The amazing cast includes Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Alexander Skarsgård, Deborah Ann Woll, Ryan Kwanten, Nelsan Ellis, Kristin Bauer van Straten, Joe Manganiello, Chris Bauer, Carrie Preston, Todd Lowe and Jim Parrack.  The series has this amazing hug cast of characters but they’ve gotten to where they bring in some heavyweight guest stars as well. Season 5 had appearances by Robert Patrick, Scott Foley, Peter Mensah and Christopher Meloni.  Even Bill Maher and P.J. O’Rourke got in on the fun this season!  True Blood season 5 really is FANGtastic!

The packaging for this box set is also really nice and and also a little different from the previous seasons. The previous seasons were darker themed and season 5 is a light colored (almost cream colored) package with some red trimmings that include Sookie on one side of the outer shell and the vile of blood that plays an important part in this season. Inside the shell there is a nice fold out sleeve that contains all seven Blu-ray discs with some of the main characters faces appearing. There’s also episode details included.  The DVD’s and digital copy come in their own little sleeve that features Sookie on the front and episode details on the back.  HBO really did a nice job with this packaging!

Bottom line is, True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)  arrives on Blu-ray with HBO Select, DVD and Digital Download on May 21st and is a must have. If you’re a fan of this series and you own the previous seasons then this is one you have to add to your collection. This box set comes highly recommended!
