Movie Review: ZOMBIE 3 (Special Edition) Blu-ray+CD

ZOMBIE 3 (aka Zombi 3 andZombie Flesh Eaters 2) was directed by the legendary Lucio Fulci and stars Deran SarafianBeatrice Ring, Massimo Vanni, Ottaviano Dell’Acqua, Marina Loi and Mike Monty. Shortly before completing this sequel, Fulci became ill and left the Philippines-based production and director Bruno Mattei and writers Claudio Fragasso & Rosella Drudi stepped in to finish the film. The score and soundtrack are by Stefano Mainetti.

After a deadly virus is stolen from a government facility, it unleashes a combination of Fulci’s signature extreme violence, Mattei/Fragasso-style surreal logic, and big bloody buckets of goo-spewing mayhem that must be seen to be believed.

There are these scientists who are working on a biological weapon called Death One which mutates and kills anyone or anything that comes in contact with it as well as reanimate the dead. What happens is, Death One gets stolen from the top-secret location and the person who steals it accidentally gets infected and this is where the outbreak begins. The virus also gets airborne (thanks to a military mistake) and the outbreak becomes an instant epidemic. The movie follows three soldiers who team up with some party girls as well as the scientists and soldiers who are trying to stop this deadly virus from going global. A lot of lives are lost after Death One gets leaked out because most of them become bloodthirsty zombies, but in the end there are a few who make it out a live.

Okay, one thing I love about Fulci’s zombies is when they crawl their way from out of their shallow graves but in this one we have to settle for crawling their way out from under tumbleweeds, or something like that. Hey, it works and that’s all that matters. This action-packed horror romp also introduced the fast moving zombies so we get all kinds here in Zombie 3. There’s also some creepy cool SFX to go along with these undead killers. There are a lot of gaps in the story with the biggest one being who the heck where the men stealing Death One in the beginning and what were they going to do with it? I mean, if they had plans to open it up and infect people then the mission was accomplished because it got leaked out alright.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. This Severin release comes in a black keepcase which helps it stand out from the others. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork and the CD features its own individual artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The film has been given a brand new 2K scan by Severin Films and uncut for the first time ever in the U.S. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition upgrade were really good. I noticed a little grain in some of the darker scenes but nothing too bad. I really didn’t have any major issues with the video and audio for this Blu-ray release. Remember that the soundtrack is included so when you slip in the CD and press play go ahead and crank it up.

Bottom line is, I enjoyed checking out Zombie 3 which is nothing more than an over-the-top, action-packed gorefest to the max. I’ve heard the stories over the years about Fulci being sick on set and not being able to finish the movie but I’m glad Mattei was there and able to step in and finish the project because the end result is a crazy cool Italian zombie movie that was filmed in the Philippines. You can just about tell who directed what but that’s part of the movie’s charm because there are two different styles of storytelling going on here. To me, the story is probably the weakest part but that’s okay because the action and gore make up for its shortcomings and then some. Oh yeah, the acting is pretty bad too but that’s also okay. What’s great are the insanely cool special effects that includes gallons of blood, makeup effects and even some sick creature effects. Hey, we get some zombie birds that go bonkers in this one! Zombie 3 will be available on a Special Edition Blu-ray+CD on May 29th.
