Movie Review: WONDER WOMAN (4K Ultra HD Combo Pack)

WONDER WOMAN is based on the comic book character created by William Moulton Marston and published by DC Comics. The movie was directed by Patty Jenkins from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner, Lucy Davis, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Eugene Brave Rock and Saïd Taghmaoui. The score is by Rupert Gregson-Williams.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana (Gal Gadot), princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior.  Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot (Chris Pine) crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home for the first time, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman is a coming-of-age origin story that starts off with Diana as a child who is curious and anxious to learn to fight like the rest of the Amazons. Her protective mother Queen Hippolyta forbids her to train at first but warms up to the idea when she sees how passionate Diana is about it. The young princess is extremely special but she doesn’t know it just yet even though there are signs and this is why her mother has been so protective over her. Her mother has told her that she was sculpted out of clay and then Zeus struck it with a bolt of lightning and this brought her to life. There’s this mystery to Diana and as she matures she slowly learns that she has the power of the gods.

There’s also Steve Trevor who crash lands a stolen plane close to Themyscira, the hidden island that the Amazons call home and Diana ends up saving his life where the two quickly hit it off. Diana’s curiousity takes control again and she decides to leave her home to venture out into this new world with Steve who promises her that she’ll find what/who she’s looking for out there. Steve and Diana join a small group of heroes that come together to help fight against the Nazi’s in World War 1 and during this battle Diana discovers what/who she’s been searching for is pulling some of the strings in this war. This is where she takes the battle directly to this sinister threat and it reveals just how powerful she really is in the end. Diana ultimately discovers her true destiny but also learns that victory doesn’t come without sacrifice.

Okay, there’s so much good stuff about this Wonder Woman movie that is told from a female perspective! I really liked the origin story about DC’s first female superhero and how she came to be. It’s a period piece that takes place during World War 1 and it’s full of amazing action and breathtaking fantasy but it’s also a touching love story because this is where Diana meets her first love, Steve Trevor. There’s also some great chemistry between Gal Gadot and Chris Pine who play these wonderful characters that are so much fun to follow.

Patty Jenkins did such an amazing job telling this interesting story and bringing this grand world to life on screen. There’s also some impressive cinematography used in the movie to help capture some of its beauty. There’s also these exotic locations where some of the scenes were shot along with some massive sets that are detailed to the max. It is a superhero movie after all and it is packed with some awesome action scenes and stunts that are pulled off and so much fun to watch. There are also some really impressive special effects used throughout the movie and it all looked fantastic. Hey, you gotta love that magic Lasso of Truth!

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc is color coded and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio for this release. Fans will be able to experience this movie like never before with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) release. This features four times the resolution of Full HD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) that delivers the brightest, most vivid and realistic color and greatest contrast.

Bottom line is, Wonder Woman is everything I was hoping it would be and so much more. It’s a coming-of-age origin story about the very first superhero who leaves her home and finds that the world she’s so curious about is full of war and heartache. It’s amazing that Patty Jenkins wasn’t even the first choice as director and she not only delivered a fantastic watch but it’s easily the best of the DCU movies to come along so far. I was skepticle about Gal Gadot playing this character in the beginning but now I couldn’t see anyone else portraying this iconic female character because she does such an amazing job. There’s also a great supporting cast that delivers these interesting characters on both sides of the playing field – heroes and villains. The movie also features some impressive action scenes and visual effects. So, when you add all of these ingredients together, you get one heck of a fun superhero movie! Movie fanatics that have already upgraded their home entertainment centers (screens and players) to watch 4K movies are sure to enjoy the experience. This release includes a 4K Ultra HD version of the film, Blu-ray, Digital Copy and more than 90-minutes of bonus material. Wonder Woman will be available on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) on September 19th and is definitely worth checking out. Highly recommended!
