Movie Review: TRIPLE THREAT (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

TRIPLE THREAT was directed by Jesse V. Johnson from a screenplay by Dwayne Smith and stars Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen, Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, Michael Bisping, Celina Jade, and Jeeja Yanin.

This breakneck thriller teams over half a dozen of the world’s biggest action stars for the martial arts film event of the year. When a hit contract is taken out on a billionaire’s daughter (Celina Jade) intent on bringing down a major crime syndicate, a team of wanted mercenaries (Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen) must take on a group of professional assassins (Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, Michael Bisping) to stop them from hitting their target. Also featuring Iko Uwais and Jeeja Yanin.

Deveraux (Michael Jai White) leads a team in what’s called a “humanitarian mission” in Thailand to free some prisoners. His team enlists Payu (Tony Jaa) and Long Fei (Tiger Chen) to help guide them deep within the jungle to their destination. What happens is, as soon as they locate the camp, Deverauz and his elite team of assassins light the place up and slaughter everyone there, except for Jaka (Iko Uwais) who loses his wife and family during the attack. The “humanitarian mission” allows the team to free one of their own, Collins (Scott Adkins).

The team quickly sets out on their new mission that takes them to Maha where their next target is Tian Xiao Xian (Celina Jade), a beautiful young heiress who’s doing charity work to help stop the corruption in the region. Xiao Xian has rubbed one of the local crime lords the wrong way so she’s hired Deveraux, Collins and the rest of the team to assassinate the heiress no matter what the cost. What they don’t expect is that the trio of mercenaries; Paya, Long Fei and Jaka have teamed up to not only protect Xiao Xian from her attackers but to get their revenge on what the team did to all three of them.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray is black and features the movie logo and the DVD disc features some artwork that matches the front cover. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Triple Threat ended up being one of the best action movies I’ve seen over the past few years. The Expendables was one thing but Triple Threat is the real deal because it features over half a dozen of the world’s biggest action stars / martial artists. The story was interesting but the driving force of this super violent action movie is this amazing international cast assembled for this exciting battle royale. Did I mention it has some of my personal favorite action stars in it – badasses like Michael Jai White and Scott Adkins? Hell yes! Jesse V. Johnson reunites with Adkins and these two have cranked out a number of fun action movies over the past few years but nothing compares to this action-packed thrill ride. Triple Threat is a fast-paced movie that’s maxed out with some well-choreographed fight scenes, magnum-force gun fights and fierce explosions.Triple Threat will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD) on May 14th.
