The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is based on the classic 1960’s television series and was directed by Guy Ritchie who co-wrote the screenplay with Lionel Wigram. The film stars Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo, Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin, Alicia Vikander as Gaby, Elizabeth Debicki as Victoria, with Jared Harris as Sanders and Hugh Grant as Waverly.

This stylish international spy adventure takes place in the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, and follows CIA agent Solo who is forced to team up with KGB agent Kuryakin. The two are forced to put aside their differences and are sent out on a mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. Their only lead is Gaby, the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

At first these two heroes are enemies and go at it a few times until they find out that they have the same goal and that’s to keep Gaby safe and try to locate her missing father. The trio set out on some wild adventures and come across some deadly opponents along the way. The two heroes take turns with the bad guys but it’s definitely Illya Kuryakin who is more aggressive and actually likes to fight, even when he’s outnumbered. He also seems to capture the eye of Gaby and the two of them end up wrestling round some after having a few drinks. Ultimately the trio completes this exciting mission that ends up much deadlier than they first expected, where they not realize they make a great team but they find out that there’s another mission waiting for them.

Okay, even though I had heard about the classic television series from the 1960’s, I ‘ve never actually seen one episode so all I had to go on was this movie and nothing to compare it to. The story was fun and the three main characters were really interesting and easy to cheer for. It’s the Cold War where the American “good guy” has to team up with the Russian “bad guy” and they become this really good team so after it’s all said and done, they’re both “good guys.” There’s also the beautiful Alicia Vikander who not only adds some major sex appeal to the team but she can also handle her own at times as well. This fast-paced movie features some really cool action scenes and stunts that covers everything from a car chase, to hitting the waves in a boat, and even some off-roading. Since this is a spy movie there has to be some high-tech gadgets that our heroes use but these gadgets are more on the low-tech end and they did a good job making all of this stuff look simple and dated.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of extras. Each disc is flat black with no artwork. Inserting each disc, the menu screens were simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. The movie looks really great in high-def.

Bottom line is, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a really fun and sexy action adventure that delivers a much more lighter side to the spy game. The neat thing about this spy adventure is that it’s driven by some really interesting characters followed up smoothly with some exciting action scenes and stunts. Guy Ritchie’s take on the hugely popular 1960’s television series ended up being a great watch that delivered these interesting characters that I would definitely like to see go on more adventures. I know the movie wasn’t a huge success at the box office here in the U.S. but maybe it brought in enough greenback internationally so that we can see these fun characters again one day. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. releases on Blu-ray Combo Pack on November 17th and is definitely worth checking out.
