The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 was directed by Francis Lawrence and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody HarrelsonElizabeth BanksJulianne MoorePhilip Seymour HoffmanJeffrey Wright, with Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland. The critically acclaimed series is based on Suzanne Collins’ best-selling book trilogy.

This final chapter picks right up after the shocking cliffhanger where we watched a brainwashed and tortured Peeta make his return to the rebels but only to try and choke out Katniss and kill her. This ends up scarring their friendship which they spend the entire movie rebuilding but it also lights a new fire and determination for Katniss who is now focused more than ever to find President Snow and ultimately put an end to his evil ways. Katniss teams up with some familiar faces/friends from District 13 and they begin on their mission that takes them deep inside Snow’s heavily guarded and booby trapped layer that’s full of deadly surprises. It takes several attempts and with each try, the districts begin to unite and this puts more stress on the tyrannical president as he and his military try to counter each step the rebels make.

As everything plays out, Katniss not only shows how brave she is but she reveals that she can be a strong leader as well. Also while all of this plays out, Peeta starts getting his mind back and remembers how close he and Katniss once were. With all kinds of obstacles and traps thrown their way, the team does finally arrive at their destination but once again Snow is always one step ahead, or so he thinks. This final approach ends up being a one way ticket for some of the heroes. Without spoiling too much, Snow and Katniss do meet face to face where he reveals to her that he’s not the only sinister and power hungry player playing the game. Katniss has grown wise in her battles and ultimately comes up with a plan that not only gives Panem an opportunity at true freedom but a chance for the heroine to finally go home and live a normal life.

Okay, I’ve enjoyed every one of these movies and this was a great way to end it all. I’m not familiar with the books so I don’t know how close the movies stay true to everything but they’ve all been an exciting watch for me. The story for Mockingjay – Part 2 was thrilling and thought-provoking at times and there’s definitely a few twists thrown at the viewer that included betrayal and even a little redemption. All of the characters were interesting and fun to follow but it truly was Jennifer Lawrence who stole the show with her powerful performance as Katniss. This young woman goes through so much heartache and loses a number of people close to her but she somehow perseveres and overcomes all of these obstacles to ultimately help save the day. The pacing is fast-paced and there’s also all kinds of crazy cool action scenes and special effects that the fans of this series will hopefully enjoy as much as I did.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Both discs include artwork that features Katniss Everdeen and her battle ready pose. Inserting each disc, the menu screens were simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good.

Bottom line is, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 was a fantastic watch. Francis Lawrence and company did an outstanding job wrapping things up between Katniss Everdeen, President Snow and everyone involved with The Hunger Games. While I don’t think this was the best entry in the franchise, I can say the movie was very exciting as it concluded this young heroine’s epic journey to freedom and the personal reward that she finally received in the end. Not only is Mockingjay – Part 2 a great entry in this franchise but it’s also one of the best action-thrillers that I’ve watched in a while.  It’s a killer movie with great performances plus this release is loaded with some awesome extras. This limited edition Blu-ray Combo Pack released on March 22nd and is definitely worth checking out.
