Movie Review: The Hunger Games (4K Ultra HD Combo Pack)

The Hunger Games is a trilogy of young adult dystopian novels written by American novelist Suzanne Collins. The movie was directed by Gary Ross and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherland, Stanley Tucci, and Lenny Kravitz.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Both discs also feature some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio for this release. Fans will be able to experience this entire franchise like never before with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) release. This features four times the resolution of Full HD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) that delivers the brightest, most vivid and realistic color and greatest contrast.

Bottom line is, The Hunger Games is the one that started the blockbuster phenomenon and it has never looked better. This is where the characters are first introduced and the rebellion is sparked thanks to Katniss who quickly catches the attention of the sinister President Snow. Katniss also finally gets to know Peeta while they battle the odds to ultimately win the 74th Annual Hunger Games. A small spark is also ignited between the two heroes. The story was fun and the movie was exciting even though it was probably the tamest of the four. I really enjoy these characters that are all brought to life by the talented cast. There are some special effects in the movie that all look impressive, especially with this new release. Movie fanatics that have already upgraded their home entertainment centers (screens and players) to watch 4K movies are sure to enjoy the experience, but this is also for the high-def loyalists because there’s a Blu-ray disc included for them as well. There’s also a digital copy that you can add to your Vudu library, etc. The entire series is now available on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) and is definitely worth checking out.
