Movie Review: THE EXPENDABLES 3 Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Combo Pack

THE EXPENDAex3 bluBLES 3 was directed by Patrick Hughes and stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz, Robert Davi, with Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The beginning of the movie starts out with a blast as we watch Barney (Stallone) and a few of the team members rescue one of their own, Doc (Snipes), one of the original team members who has been held prisoner for the past eight years. Once they rescue him, they immediately head out on their latest mission and this is where Barney makes the startling discovery that his old partner turned nemesis Stonebanks (Gibson) who was once thought dead, is alive and well and as deadly as ever.

Barney comes up with a new plan to take it to Stonebanks where he pretty much tells his old reliable team that he doesn’t need them any more so he goes out and recruits a much younger team and ones he wan’t allow himself to get close to – a new breed of The Expendables that he doesn’t have to get close to and become friends with. Well things go south really fast and those new recruits who get themselves captured by Stonebanks who begins to play psychotic mind games with Barney. At first Barney thinks he’s going to go it all alone with his Stonebanks and his small army but Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the old gang shows up to lend a hand and  they take  the war to Stonebanks that leads to an explosive final round between the two founding members of The Expendables. Ultimately, Barney defeats this ruthless enemy and learns a valuable lesson about friendship.

Okay, I’ve been a huge fan of this franchise so far but I must say that this one didn’t pack the explosive punch the first two did. The story was cool and interesting but this time they all decided to tone down the violence some and gave the movie a PG-13 rating and I blame this for the film’s mediocrity. It was definitely lacking! Stallone has even recently been quoted saying that they made a mistake making it Pg-13 and it won’t happen again so if we get another installment it’ll be a hard R. These movies are made for the fans and they’re all meant to be over-the-top and ruthless action films and as bad as this sounds, the blood and guts were missed in this one. Now, don’t get me wrong because the movie is still a lot of fun and it is loaded with an amazing cast which is the biggest cast to date and they all get to have their moments to shine. There’s also plenty of action scenes and explosions, just not any red stuff to go along with it all.

The packaging comes with a slip cover. What you see up top is actually the artwork on the case itself that features all of the main cast. The slip cover only features seven members of the team on the front and the back has the rest of the them, along with movie details and list of extras. The back of the case is also a little different and features an image from the movie, details and list of extras. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality were both crisp and clear.

Bottom line is, The Expendables 3 wasn’t as good as the first two installments but it’s still a fun movie full of action, more cheesy one-liners and those familiar action icons we’re used to seeing in these kind of movies along with some new recruits. This release not only includes the theatrical version of the movie but there’s also an unrated extended cut that includes 5 more minutes of action. As far as the unrated part goes, I didn’t see anything bad added here in this extra footage. This Blu-ray Combo Pack releases on November 25th and is definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re a big fan of the Expendables franchise like I am.
