Movie Review: THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Producer Sam Liu co-directs THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN with Jake Castorena from a script by Peter J. Tomasi. The all-star cast is led by Jerry O’Connell, Rebecca Romijn and Rainn Wilson as the voices of Superman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively. The potent trio is joined by the DC Universe Movies’ returning voices of the Justice League: Jason O’Mara as Batman, Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman, Shemar Moore as Cyborg, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Hal Jordan, and Christopher Gorham as The Flash. Executive Producers are Sam Register and James Tucker.

The Man of Steel meets his ultimate match when Doomsday comes to Earth – hell bent on destroying everything and everyone in his path, including the Justice League. The Death of Superman ultimately finds Superman in a fight to the finish when the Man of Steel becomes the only hero who can stand in the way of the monstrous creature Doomsday and his unstoppable rampage of destruction. As the inaugural film in the DC Universe Movies series, Superman Doomsday told an abridged version of “The Death Of Superman,” DC Comics’ landmark 1992-93 comic phenomenon. But with a runtime of 75 minutes, the film focused on a core, singular storyline. The new, animated The Death of Superman, the first of a two-part film experience that will conclude with Reign of the Supermen in early 2019, restores many of the moments and characters that fans hold dear to their hearts.

The Death of Superman introduces Doomsday, a mysterious alien that crashes to Earth and starts destroying everything in its path. This updated storyline based on the classic 90’s comic book spends a lot of time with character development and the relationship Clark Kent/Superman has with Lois Lane but it also gives the supporting characters (heroes and villains) their moments in the spotlight as well. When Doomsday is unleashed, it doesn’t take long for the Justice League to show up and each superhero gets their turn at this unstoppable monstrosity, but they all come up short-handed and can’t find a way to stop the beast.

One by one, Doomsday goes through the entire Justice League and makes them look like a bunch of amateurs while it continues on its path of destruction in Metropolis. What happens is, Superman finally arrives (he was on a date with his girl) and the ultimate showdown begins between good versus evil. It doesn’t take long for Supes to realize that he’s never faced an enemy this powerful before but in the end he does find a way to stop the alien wrecking machine even though it comes with a heartbreaking and shocking sacrifice – his own. In the end, Superman pays the ultimate price so he can save the world from Doomsday.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc is color coded and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio. The Blu-ray Deluxe Gift Set also includes a collectible Superman figurine.

Bottom line is, The Death of Superman was a fantastic upgrade from 2007’s Superman: Doomsday that gave the viewers an abbreviated take on the story that left out a lot of important parts. This new entry goes more in-depth with the story and sets everything up a lot better with its development. This movie stays much closer to the source material that was in the comic book but it does add its own original elements throughout the watch. This story from the popular “Black Bag” DC comic book is what got me into comics in the first place because it kills off the most iconic superhero of all time which was a shocker to us all. The story is heartbreaking and the introduction of Doomsday is terrifying because nobody is able to stop this monstrous alien except for the Man of Steel who sacrifices himself to save the world. This isn’t my favorite animation style and look for these characters but it’s still okay and I thought the voice cast did a good job with their characters. This isn’t my favorite voice cast lineup but I still got into the characters enough and that’s what’s important. This is a well-crafted animated adventure that’s the first of two parts because we’ll be getting Reign of the Supermen in 2019. This Blu-ray Deluxe Gift Set for The Death of Superman will be available on August 7th. Remember to watch through the end credits!
