Movie Review: THE CONJURING (Blu-ray+DVD+Ultraviolet Combo Pack)

Based on  the true case files, The Conjuring tells the horrifying tale of how world-renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

THE CONJURING was directed by James Wan, written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes and has a fantastic cast that includes Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Haley McFarland, Mackenzie Foy, Kyla Deaver and Sterling Jerins.

The movie takes place in the 70s and follows an average all-American family that moves into a house that they quickly find out is haunted. They get in touch with the Warrens who come to their home to check out the situation and it’s Lorraine who immediately sees how bad this situation really is and this is where things get really good and very creepy!

We begin to see eerie sights, shadows, objects moving, doors closing on their own, figures and one helpless person getting possessed by a really angry spirit. The history of why all of this is happening does get uncovered as we watch all of these haunting things happen to this family and this allows the Warrens to sort of know what has to be done to get this spirit away from them. By the end of the movie, we get to see an exorcism that is so good it pays homage to The Exorcist while it still keeps its originality. You feel so bad for the person possessed and watch her battle for her own soul during the finale.

OK, I absolutely loved this movie and everything about it and I felt like I was in a horror movie time warp that took me back to the 70s!  James Wan doesn’t just make movies, he knows what the fans like and caters to that and pretty much always succeeds. There’s some parts of the movie that are downright creepy, from a scene where we see someone hanging clothes outside and we watch the wind sort of blow one of the sheets where we get this quick reveal that this spirit is right there beside her (that was fantastic), then we the frightening wardrobe scene that almost made me come out of my seat and then there’s this one moment at the end where we get just a peak at the poor victim’s face that is covered by a sheet where she is in full blown possession mode at this point and that was really a little uncomfortable, in a creepy good way!  All of these scenes are accompanied by this music that really sets that moment and to me, makes everything that much scarier! Music and sounds can make or break a movie and with The Conjuring, they got it all right!  Hats off to the Hayes brothers for writing such a great ghost story that is based on something that did actually happen.

The movie is packed with practical effects that pay off to the max!  Wan did a great job capturing these and when you add camera angel, lighting and shadows it’s a home run for horror fans!  All of the acting was really fantastic and I don’t think they could have had a better cast for this movie. Lili Taylor’s performance was nothing short of spectacular because you really like her character and feel for her as she goes through all of this physical and mental trauma courtesy of the evil spirit. I also think the location was just spot on, from the old house where all of this takes place to the yard and eerie looking river bank we get a glimpse of and then there’s that creepy ass tree in the yard that is a part of the horrific history.  So we have all of this and I’d like to give an honorable mention to the “Annabelle” doll in the movie. This thing is so creepy that the few scenes we got of her just added one more uncomfortable element to this movie.

The packaging for this combo pack is also a highlight all its own.  it comes with a cool lenticular slip cover that features a certain “clapping” scene from the movie. I’m a huge fan of gimmicks and this is a good one!  The back features movie details, a few images and the special features that are included with the release.

Bottom line is, The Conjuring is the scariest movie I have seen in a long time and I don’t scare easily plus it’s also one of my favorite movies of the year!  Is it the scariest movie ever made, no but it ranks right up there with the top horror classics like The Exorcist and The Amityville Horror. This Blu-ray+DVD+Ultraviolet  Combo Pack releases on October 22nd and is a must have and it is an instant classic!
