Movie Review: THE 16th EPISODE

THE 16TH EPISODE (previously known as Little Horror Movie) was written and directed by Jérôme Cohen-Olivar and stars Cody Heuer, Rebecca Ramon, Einar Kuusk, Rosine Young and Abdellatif Chawki.

In THE 16TH EPISODE,three YouTubers, each with their own inner demons, visit the mythical town of Casablanca. With their viewership down, they get invited to attend a satanic ritual and soon realize that maybe all their audience wants is to see them die.

The movie follows show host Helen (Rebecca Romon), sound tech Einar (Einar Kuusk) and cameraman Mark (Cody Heurer), three globetrotting Youtubers who end up traveling to Morocco to film their sixteenth episode of their popular online series.

They’re hoping this is the stop that’ll take the vloggers to the next level with lots of views. They end up staying with Mrs. Frangier (Rosine Young), a mysterious older lady who welcomes the trio into her home and she only has one rule – don’t go in the basement. The trio have a tour guide (Abdellatif Chawki) that takes them to a local ceremony (a wedding) where Helen ends up in this strange hypnotic state where she joins in and afterwards it leaves her changed in a disturbing way.

Einar and Mark make a shocking discovery their fearless leader Helen is now possessed by a demon and to top this off they’re surrounded by sinister figures with some terrifying ulterior motives. It’s a trap! Okay, without spoiling it, let’s just say there’s a plan for Helen and it’s not a good one. The three friend’s final misadventure turns into a complete nightmare and even becomes deadly before it all ends.

Bottom line is, The 16th Episode ended up being a well crafted indie thriller about demonic possession. Unfortunately, we get plenty of these kind of supernatural chillers so it’s hard to come up with something completely new and original for the audience. That doesn’t mean The 16th Episode isn’t a good watch because it is. Jerome Cohen-Olivar picked a great location that also plays an important part and the movie features some really good performances by the cast. The interesting story for this found-footage creeper borrows from real mythology and mixes it up with some unsettling horror elements. There’s also a few creepy cool special effects to go along with it but you have to wait for it. This moody possession thriller is a slowburn at times but there’s a nice payoff at the end for horror fans. The 16th Episode is now playing in select theaters and it’s also available On Demand and Digital. Put this one on your watch list!
