Movie Review: SUICIDE SQUAD Extended Cut Blu-ray Combo Pack

SUICIDE SQUAD was written and directed by David Ayer based on the characters from DC, the film stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Viola DavisSuicide Squad also stars Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. It is produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Okay, this movie serves as a launching pad for these antiheroes so the first half of the movie is used to introduce the viewer to these wonderful villains as the team is slowly assembled – as the DCU continues to expand. We also get a little background history for a few of them that shows why they might be the way they are. You know, the whole villain thing. They do finally go into the battlefield where they not only complete the mission that’s been given to them but they have a mysterious new adversary waiting – one that’s of the supernatural realm. There’s plenty of action and fight scenes to go along the team’s journey as they press forward on their first mission. As action-packed as the movie is, there’s also plenty of special effects and CGI to go along with it and it all looks amazing. I think some of the cool cinematography also helps with many of these scenes that shows off some of the beauty and danger this movie possesses. Everything is also highly detailed; from the props, to the look of the characters. I even liked the music used in the movie.

David Ayer did a really good job with this movie, from writing the story to bringing it all to life. There’s a lot of source material to draw from as well as plenty of characters because the team has had a revolving door in the comics over the years, but I think they nailed it with this live-action incarnation. All of the actors did an amazing job bringing these interesting characters to life. Each one has their own unique personality and attitude and that’s a major part of the movie’s charm. The two standouts were easily Will Smith’s Deadshot and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn but what little screen time Jared Leto’s Joker was given, he certainly delivered. I really like this version of the “Clown Prince” and the relationship he has with his girl Harley. By the way, I couldn’t see anyone else doing any of these wonderful characters so please don’t recast any of them!

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. All three discs also feature some artwork – no color. Inserting each disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the two high-definition discs were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc was really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio. This Combo Pack features the extended version and theatrical version of the film in high-definition on Blu-ray; and the DVD features the theatrical version in standard definition. The extended cut features more action and more Squad with 13 more minutes of footage not previously seen in theaters. All Blu-ray products include a digital version of both the extended and theatrical versions of the movie in Digital HD with UltraViolet.

Bottom line is, Suicide Squad ended up being a fun live-action adaptation of the DC Comics and is probably my favorite DCU movie now. It has some flaws but it’s also one of those kind of movies that you want to watch over and over again – and each time you like it a little more. David Ayer sets the stage here for Task Force X and the wonderful personalities that make up this unit of misfits and he delivered an entertaining product. They start off as an expendable group of villains and end up becoming a valuable team of antiheroes that prove they can do some good in the world. This also left me wanting so much more from these characters so hopefully we’ll get a sequel one day or at least see them show up in other established DC movies. Harley Quinn is supposed to get her own movie now and I can’t wait! David Ayer and this amazing cast have delivered an action movie that’s really exciting and a lot of crazy fun. Suicide Squad arrives on Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD Combo Pack on December 13th and is definitely worth checking out. Don’t forget that you get the theatrical and extended cut with this release.
