Movie Review: SPIRITED AWAY (Collector’s Edition) Blu-ray + CD

Spirited Away was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and features the voice talents of Daveigh Chase, Suzanne Pleshette, Michael Chiklis, David Ogden Stiers, and Susan Egan.

Chihiro’s family is moving to a new house, but when they stop on the way to explore an abandoned village, her parents undergo a mysterious transformation and Chihiro is whisked into a world of fantastic spirits ruled over by the sorceress, Yubaba. Put to work in a magical bathhouse for spirits and demons, Chihiro must use all her wits to survive in this strange new place, find a way to free her parents and return to the normal world.

Spirited Away is a film overflowing with imaginative creatures and thrilling storytelling. The story centers around a young girl and her parents who discover an abandoned amusement park while they’re moving and it ends up being much more than meets the eye. Her parents are magically transformed into giant pigs so she has to try and find a way to turn them back into humans.

She ends up befriending a mysterious young man who sort of serves as her tour guide as she enters into a dark and mysterious land that’s full of amazing creatures, spirits and sorcerors. There’s also danger and obstacles that she has to overcome as she makes her way through this mysterious world where she ultimately finds a way to get her parents back to normal with a little help from a few new friends.

The limited-edition set comes housed in an elegant hard slipcase, with a new 40-page book with stunning art and essays. Featured in a deluxe disc portfolio will be a Blu-ray of the film paired with hours of special features and the film’s soundtrack on CD, now available exclusively on disc in North America. The set’s new 40-page book includes essays by film critic Kenneth Turan and famed critic and film historian Leonard Maltin, and statements by Toshio Suzuki and Hayao Miyazaki. Spirited Away is here presented with a release perfect for collectors and animation fans who have adored the critically-acclaimed film since its initial release.

Bottom line is, Spirited Away ended up being another entertaining watch that follows the impressive release of Princess Mononoke back in May. This was also another first time watch for me and I really enjoyed it. This is a touching story full of imagination and interesting creatures that pulls you into this wondrous world full of fantasy. This dark new world introduces all kinds of threats and obstacles as this young girl searches for a way to fix her parents awkward situation and ultimately find her way home. The voice cast did a really good job with their characters and this is old school anime style under the direction of Hayao Miyazaki who follows up his masterpiece, Princess Mononoke with another astounding adventure. Shout! Factory has partnered up with GKIDS and Studio Ghibli to bring this epic anime classic to the U.S. in a beautiful 2-disc set that is a must have for the fans.
