Movie Review: SOURCE CODE (4K Ultra HD Combo Pack)

SOURCE CODE was directed by Duncan Jones from a screenplay by Ben Ripley and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright in this mind-bending action thriller about an experimental government program used to prevent a deadly terrorist attack in downtown Chicago.

Helicopter pilot Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) is part of a top-secret military operation that enables him to experience the last few minutes in the life of Sean Fentress, a man who died in a commuter-train explosion. The purpose of Colter’s mission is to learn the identity of the bomber and prevent a similar catastrophe. As Colter lives Sean’s final moments, he becomes more certain that he can prevent the first tragedy from occurring — as long as he doesn’t run out of time.

Source Code follows this man who is sent on a mission by a top-secret military operation to try and stop a train from exploding. His mission is to find out who bombs the train to help prevent future catastrophes. He’s given eight minute time loops and with each jump he gets a few steps closer to the identity of the bomber but he’s also growing closer to the woman he’s traveling with on the train.

He also learns more about his mysterious past with each mission jump and it’s a past that’s heavily guarded by this top-secret operation that’s full of well hidden secrets. What happens is, he ends up discovering who the bomber is and locates the explosives, so he’s able to stop this first threat from ever happening, which also means time has been changed and this also allows him a new lease on life – one he so desperately desires.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The UHD disc features some matching artwork and the Blu-ray disc has a blue finish and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this 4K upgrade were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio for this release. Fans will be able to experience this movie like never before with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) release. This features four times the resolution of Full HD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) that delivers the brightest, most vivid and realistic color and greatest contrast.

Bottom line is, I enjoyed revisiting Source Code which is a masterfully crafted sci-fi thriller that’s full of edge of your seat action, intense suspense and interesting characters. What I like most about this movie is the complex plot because it includes several twists and slowly reveals them as everything plays out. There’s a lot of action and suspense but there’s also romance that builds between the two main characters throughout the watch. I liked this chemistry between Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan as well as the direction from Duncan Jones who captures everything he needs to make Source Code such an entertaining sci-fi thriller. It’s also my personal favorite from the filmmaker. Movie fanatics that have already upgraded their home entertainment centers (screens and players) to watch 4K movies are sure to enjoy the experience. Source Code will be available on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) on May 8th.
