Movie Review: SMALLFOOT (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

SMALLFOOT is based on the book “Yeti Tracks” by Sergio Pablos. The movie was directed by Karey Kirkpatrick from a screenplay he co-wrote with Clare Sera and features the voice talents of Channing Tatum as the yeti, Migo, and James Corden as the smallfoot, Percy. Smallfoot also stars Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Danny DeVito, Gina Rodriguez, Yara Shahidi, Ely Henry and Jimmy Tatro. The animation was by Sony Pictures Imageworks.

An animated adventure for all ages, with fun new music by Zendaya & Common and featuring an all-star cast, “Smallfoot” turns the Bigfoot legend upside down when a bright young Yeti (Channing Tatum) finds something he thought didn’t exist—a human! News of the “smallfoot,” Percy (James Corden), throws the simple Yeti community into an uproar over what else might be out there in the big world beyond their snowy village.  This is an epic story about friendship and courage!

Smallfoot takes the Bigfoot legend and turns it all around. When Migo (Channing Tatum), a friendly and outgoing Yeti accidentally comes in contact with a human after a plane crashes high up in the mountains, he goes back to tell his community but when some of them go back to the location nothing is there. Migo faces banishment from his home because nobody else believes his amazong story except for a few close friends who quietly invite Migo into their own secret society that has proof the elusive Smallfoot does indeed exist.

What happens is, Migo’s curiosity gets the best of him so he decides to go on an adventure into the unknown where he meets Percy (James Corden), a human adventurer, and guess what, Migo takes Percy back with him and the two become friends even though they can’t understand a word each other is saying. All Migo wants is to be back in good graces with his community but when a shocking truth is revealed about the Yeti and why they hide from the humans in the first place, he has to make a tough decision that has the potentional to change things forever.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, more artwork and list of special features. Each disc is dark blue and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, I had a blast watching Smallfoot and it’s the best family friendly animated feature (not counting the DC animated movies) that Warner Bros. has released in a long time. I really liked the story and how it did a complete reversal between these elusive beasts and humans which gives the viewer the Yeti’s point-of-view even though we’re completely familiar with it. The story also has a lot of heart to it because it features several postive messages and the kids today need as much of that as they can get. That’s also what makes the movie so funny, that and the talented voice cast that does a great job with these wonderful characters. I have to add that Smallfoot has a Looney Tunes vibe to it even though it is a computer animated movie but if you pay close attention you can see the similarities with some of the character designs – and I loved the detailed designs. On top of that, this release also includes an interactive sing-along that lets viewers follow the words of their favorite songs from the film. Smallfoot will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital) on December 11th.
