Movie Review: ROCKETMAN (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

ROCKETMAN is an epic musical odyssey that’s based on the life and career of Elton John. The movie was directed by Dexter Fletcher from a screenplay by Lee Hall and stars Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Gemma Jones and Bryce Dallas Howard. The music is composed by Matthew Margeson.

“His music inspires you, his life will surprise you,” Rocketman is a one-of-a-kind musical celebration set to Elton John’s most beloved songs. Discover how a shy, small-town boy becomes one of the most iconic figures in rock & roll. Featuring an all-star cast, this truly spectacular and utterly electrifying ride is filled with show-stopping musical performances and is “unlike anything you’ve ever seen” (Jake Hamilton, WFLD-TV (FOX)).

Rocketman follows Elton John from an early age as the prodigy slowly discovers his musical talent as well as his sexuality. Needless to say, he stayed in his shell for quite a while. The story also deals with his semi-normal relationship with his mother as well as his close friendship with his writing partner Bernie Taupin. These two started off as just writing partners with nothing else in mind but through the years they grew closer and the rest is rock ‘n roll history.

Rocketman features all of Elton John’s biggest hits that are played out through musical and dance numbers but they’re also a part of his story and helps everything flow as he moves on to his next step in his personal life as well as his career. Elton John tried to hide his wild life style that included sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll but everyone close to him could kind of tell – even his mother. Through a routine of rather entertaining therapy sessions, the viewer gets to know the charismatic legend as he shares his amazing journey.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc is color coded and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio. There’s also a special booklet inside that includes a message from Elton John who personally endorses this movie.

Bottom line is, Rocketman ended up being an extremely entertaining watch that’s a biopic hybrid with musical dance numbers that are added in to help tell the stories. Elton John is such an intriguing character and has lived a fascinating life. This watch starts off with the musician at a young age and takes the viewer all the way through to the early MTV days. I really liked the story about this legendary pop rocker who’s gifted with this amazing musical talent that has allowed him to crank out so many memorable hits over the years. The crazy thing is, he could just sit down at the piano and come up with something catchy like it was nothing. The cast did a really good job with their characters but it’s Taron Egerton who stole the show as Elton John and he’s actually singing those songs during the movie. That’s impressive! First there was Bohemian Rhapsody, then The Dirt, and now there’s Rocketman and it’s such a fun watch and something a little different than the other two biopics. Dexter Fletcher did a great job bringing Elton John’s story to life on screen and I think he’s delivered one of the best movies of the year. Rocketman is now available on a Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital). This is a fun movie!
