Movie Review: ROBOWAR (Limited Edition) Blu-ray

ROBOWAR was directed by Bruno Mattei from a screenplay by Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi and stars Reb Brown, Catherine Hickland, John P. Dulaney,Massimo Vanni and Jim Gaines.

When a team of badass commandos is hired for a jungle rescue mission, they’ll instead find them hunted by a kill-crazed creature that is part man, part machine and all glorious ‘80s ItaloSleaze.

Shoot first and ask questions later! An elite team of commandos are sent deep into the jungle on a dangerous rescue mission. Upon arrival, they immediately set out on foot to their destination but when they arrive at the hotspot they’re only able to retrieve one female survivor after they’re ambushed by some hostile guerrillas. The team also discovers that they’re up against a mysterious figure called Omega-1 that has them targeted for destruction and one of their own is behind the creation of his war machine. Kinda, sorta.

What happens is, the rescue mission ends up becoming a fight for survival as the hunter begins to take out his targets one by one. Each member of this elite squad brutally goes down in battle and none of them never really have a chance with what they’re up against. It all comes down to Marphy Black (Reb Brown) and Virgin (Catherine Hickland), the only two survivors of this attack where Marphy makes a shocking revelation that there’s a strange connection between him and his enemy. This confrontation between these two figures also allows Virgin to get away to safety.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. This Severin release comes in a black keepcase which helps it stand out from the others. The Blu-ray disc also features some artwork that matches the front cover. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. Robowar was scanned in 4K from the original negative. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Robowar is one of those movies I rented on VHS when I was a kid and I even got it back then that this movie was a complete ripoff of two popular franchises. This one hit Robocop and Predator in one really bad punch. Those Italians were bad about this weren’t they! Anyway, it’s a campy cheesfest through and through but it’s still a fun watch that’s full of nonstop action, insane amounts of gunfire and big explosions. There’s even some eye candy! Bruno Mattei and company filmed this in the steamy jungles of the Philippines so the location was spot on for a cheesy survivalfest like this. The suit that this mysterious figure was wearing ended up being a major downfall because it’s nothing more than an altered motorcycle helmet and leather digs. Needless to say, they didn’t have a big budget and it really shows throughout the watch. With that being said, it’s still a fun movie that I’ll check off on my “so bad it’s good” list. Robowar is finally available for the first time ever on a Limited Edition Blu-ray from Severn Films.
