Movie Review: [REC] 4: APOCALYPSE

rec 4

[REC] 4: APOCALYPSE was directed by Jaume Balagueró and stars Manuela Velasco, Paco Manzanedo, Ismael Fritschi, Héctor Colomé and María Alfonso Rosso.

After a brief stop for a bloody wedding reception in Genesis, Apocalypse takes everything full circle. We get a nice reminder of where this crazy infection first began, right there in that old building and Angela, the young female reporter that was trapped inside.

In this final entry, only hours have passed since the events of the first movie took place and the army have been called in to contain the problem. The detonators are set and go off, everyone thinks the mission is a success and Angela makes it out alive but she’s not alone because she is carrying something inside her. Quarantine still comes into play here and Angela and the few survivors who made it out of the building along with her are all headed in a new and mysterious direction.

They’re all quickly introduced to their hosts but the weird thing is, they’re all on a ship in the middle of the ocean. Of course this raises many questions and slowly they get answered and it’s not pretty. The people on this ship are doing experiments with the infected. Angela and the few survivors begin to rebel against their shady hosts and as all of this plays out. We watch people turn against one another, lines are crossed and this deadly infection is running wild, literally. Time to bring in the monkeys!

As the movie plays out, Angela shows just how strong of a survivor she actually is and learns why her host is so interested in her. Once Angela discovers the horrible truth here, it’s up to her to try and put an end to this epidemic once and for all. Everything really does come full circle here in this final installment and it ends with an exciting bang.

Okay, I’ve been a huge fan of the [Rec] series since it first launched back in 2007. Each movie has been a lot of fun from how Paca Plaza and Balagueró started it all off with to the way Balagueró has wrapped everything up. I liked how more key events from inside the building were revealed and how everything changes when the survivors end up on that mysterious ship in the middle of the ocean. The story is fun, it includes a few twists and much more about Angela is revealed. In [Rec] 4 we get more crazed, infected people, there’s plenty of blood and gore, even a little humor and how could I ever forget abut those monkeys. Hey, the monkeys in this movie will give you the creeps and haunt your dreams!

Bottom line is, [Rec] 4: Apocalypse was a really fun and exciting way to wrap up this cool horror franchise. There’s terrifying and nailbiting visuals throughout the movie, from the opening scene to the explosive finale. I can’t say that this is the best entry in the franchise because that would easily be the first movie, but I can say it is a good one with a great ending for the franchise. This movie releases On Demand and iTunes on Friday, January 2nd and is definitely worth checking out.
