Movie Review: PATH OF BLOOD (Special Edition) Blu-ray

PATH OF BLOOD was directed and animated by Eric Power and features the voice talents of Kenji Kiuchi, Yoshi Okai, Shinya Wakao and Leo Shue Schuster.

Japan, 1614. War is over. Samurai displaced through defeat or reform wander the countryside as Ronin, seeking work where they can find it. At the edge of a forgotten village lies a path leading deep into the mountains. It is rumored the brave few who make it down the path will be rewarded with a life of freedom and purpose. However, none who have entered the path have returned. When a lone samurai sets his course towards the Path of Blood, unknown danger and terror awaits. Will his great swordsmanship be enough to survive?

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. The language is in Japanese so the movie comes subtitled in English. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Path of Blood was an impressive debut from Eric Power. This DIY project was shot frame-by-frame in the traditional paper stop motion (just like the pilot episode of “South Park”) and the final product is really impressive. The movie tells the tale of this lone ronan who embarks on a journey where he meets a few allies as well as a number of deadly enemies that include other samuria, deadly ninjas and lots of hidden booby traps. His highly dangerous adventure leads him to a worthy adversary where they battle it out to see who’s the deadliest warrior and in the end this skilled ronan proves that he’s the ultimate warrior. Even though this movie might not appeal to a wide audience (or kids) – fans of animaton, aficionados and asian cinemaniacs will appreciate the time and effort that Eric Powers put into this passion project of his. This is extremely violent love letter to the Japanese samurai genre is now available on a Special Edition Blu-ray.
