Movie Review: PAN Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD Combo Pack

PAN is based on the beloved characters created by J.M. Barrie. The movie was directed by Joe Wright from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Paul Webster and stars Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund as James Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, Amanda Seyfried as Mary, and Levi Miller as Peter.

This untold origin story of the classic fairytale starts at the very beginning as a young mother drops her baby off at an orphanage run by a group of unfriendly nuns. Fast forward twelve years later and this is where we meet Peter (Levi Miller), a rebellious boy full of mischief and adventure who dreams of a better life and one day finding his mother. On one incredible night, Peter is whisked away from the orphanage and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors and fairies called Neverland. This magical new world is where Peter will ultimately find out who he really is.

Once Peter arrives in Neverland, he finds amazing new adventures and fights life-or-death battles while trying to uncover the secret of his mother, who left him at the orphanage so long ago, and his rightful place in this magical land. Peter first encounters the ruthless pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) who wants to take over Neverland. Blackbeard is mining fairydust and has enslaved many people do his dirty work. Blackbeard also knows about Peter’s destiny and fears him. Peter also meets a new friend named James Hook (Garrett Hedlund) and the two of them team up with the warrior Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) to ultimately defeat the ruthless pirate to not only save Neverland but to help Peter discover his true destiny and become the hero who will forever be known as Peter Pan.

Okay, I enjoyed Pan but it did have its flaws with the biggest one being the slow burn. The story is interesting and all but it takes way too long for things to kick into high gear. All of the acting was really good and the characters were interesting. Even though Hugh Jackman played the villain it was hard to dislike the bad guy. I will add that I liked seeing Peter and Hook as friends because we’ve always known them to be arch enemies. Newcomer Levi Miller did a great job with his character! Garrett Hedlund’s Hook is this Indiana Jones type of swashbuckler. We also get to see the Lost Boys form, Tinkerbell (sort of) and even Mermaids so nothing was left out. There just wasn’t enough of the good stuff. A standout for the movie were the amazing sets created for Neverland. The costumes were all also very eyecatching. The movie did include some fun stunts and special effects. I will admit that some of the CGI didn’t look finished at times and could have looked better.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray and DVD discs are flat black with the Pan logo on them. Inserting each disc, the menu screens were simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good.

Bottom line is, Pan was a fun live-action adventure but it wasn’t a great watch by no means. The story focuses on Peter’s origins and how he actually got to Neverland and became the iconic character instead of retelling the same old familiar story that we’ve all seen. It takes a while for the movie to get going but once it does it is pretty enjoyable for the most part. Once again, it’s the slow burn that drags it down. This Blu-ray Combo Pack releases on December 22nd and is geared towards a younger audience. This is a movie that the entire family can sit down and watch together. Pan is an okay watch but nothing really special.
