Movie Review: NINJA III: THE DOMINATION (Collector’s Edition) Blu-ray

NINJA III: THE DOMINATION was directed by Sam Firstenberg from a screenplay by James R. Silke and stars Lucinda Dickey, Jordan Bennett, Shô Kosugi, David Chung and James Hong.

Aerobic instructor Christie Ryder (Lucinda Dickey) becomes possessed by the spirit of an evil ninja when she comes to his aid after being shot down. Dominated by the killer’s vicious and relentless rage, she sets out to brutally attack his enemies. Her boyfriend, confused by Christie’s changing personality and afraid that he might be her next victim, enlists the aid of Yamada (Shô Kosugi), the quintessential martial arts hero. In a life-threatening exorcism and ultimate fight to the death, Yamada proves that he is Christie’s only chance for survival. For only a ninja can kill another ninja!

Ninja III: The Domination immediately starts off with this Asian business man walking into a cave that just happens to be in the outskirts of L.A. (I think) and he opens this old trunk that has the belongings of a ninja that is now an evil spirit, are you following me so far?  Why or how this guy even knew this stuff was there is never answered but he puts on the old garb and sets out on a merciless killing spree.  This evil ninja takes on an entire police force and gets shot numerous times before he does some kind of ninja spinning trick into the sand as he holds on to his last breath. What happens next is this innocent and really attractive aerobics instructor/phone pole climber comes across the evil ninja (talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time) and he somehow possesses her and this is how she becomes this new ninja killing machine and pretty much dominates everyone who gets in her way. She sets out for revenge on the rest of the police force that took out the mysterious ninja but one of the cops happens to be her new boyfriend so things get a little more complicated.

Enter the good ninja Yamada, who also appeared in Enter the Ninja and Revenge of the Ninja, who shows up to help the young woman out. It’s never really addressed but he somehow knew who he was dealing with and what was going on and at the end of the day, only a ninja can kill another ninja but the trick is getting the evil spirit out of the girl. To do this they somehow get her up to an old temple to perform a ritual that exorcises the evil ninja spirit from her body so now she’s free. Now it’s ninja versus evil spirit ninja in an epic showdown. This was easily my favorite part of the movie which showcases some cool action scenes, several tricks and special effects and ultimately a cool ninja victory but I’ll say this, that evil ninja spirit was tough to take down.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/0-card. The front features the all-new artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The reverse sleeve features some original artwork and movie credits so you have your pick of which side you’d like to use for the front cover. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. This re-release features a brand new 4K scan from the original film elements. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition upgrade were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, I really enjoyed revisiting Ninja III: The Domination and even though Scream Factory had already given this cult classic an upgrade, now they’ve given their own upgrade an upgrade. You gotta love the good ole Cannon Films days and martial arts movies were huge back in the early to mid-80’s and even though this one is full of action it also includes some supernatural elements. It doesn’t make much sense at all but the combination of action and the supernatural is just fun to watch. Ninja III includes a beautiful woman, some ninjas, lots of throwing stars, bow and arrows, poisonous darts, martial arts, action scenes and an evil spirit – so what more could you ask for?! Action movie fans and supernatural fans can come together for this crazy flick and get a kick out of it. No pun intended. Ninja III: The Domination will be available on a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray on June 12th and this high-def upgrade is definitely worth checking out.
