Movie Review: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 (4K Ultra HD Combo Pack)

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 is based on the television series of the same name. The movie was directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Maggie Q, Michelle Monaghan, Billy Crudup, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Simon Pegg, Keri Russell, Laurence Fishburne and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Retired from active duty, and training recruits for the Impossible Mission Force, agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) faces the toughest foe of his career: Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an international broker of arms and information, who is as cunning as he is ruthless. Davian emerges to threaten Hunt and all that he holds dear — including the woman Hunt loves.

This 2006 action-thriller sequel finds Ethan Hunt retired from the IMF and has started training new recruits for the top-secret agency. Ethan has become comfortable with his life away from the spy game and has even settled down with Julia (Michelle Monaghan). This is the first time Ethan has allowed himself to get close to someone but his past comes back to haunt him because Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a dangerous international arms dealer lures Ethan out of retirement and poor Julia gets a taste of how dangerous life can actually get when you’re close to Ethan.

Ethan doesn’t waste much time putting a new team together that includes his old friend Luther (Ving Rhames), who is joined by two new agents, Declan Gormley (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and Zhen Lei (Maggie Q), in his mission to stop this ruthless mastermind before he stirs up too much trouble. The big problem for Ethan is that Julia gets pulled right in the middle of the fued so he has to play it smart and outwit Owen so she doesn’t get hurt. In the end, Ethan comes out on top and stops this latest sinister threat but he also realizes that anyone who gets close to him is always going to be in danger.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The UHD disc has a black finish and features the movie logo and the two Blu-ray discs have a light blue finish and both feature the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this new release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio quality. Fans will be able to experience this movie like never before with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) release. This features four times the resolution of Full HD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) that delivers the brightest, most vivid and realistic color and greatest contrast.

Bottom line is, I really enjoyed revisiting Mission: Impossible 3 and had even forgotten that J.J. Abrams directed this exciting third entry. I liked the story (sleazy gov, a terrorist plot and returning mask twists) that actually allowed Ethan to have some kind of short-lived love life even if it was doomed to fail because of how dangerous his profession is. This movie, just like the others, is an international globetrotter that travels to some beautiful locations as Ethan and his team try to stop this latest villain from carrying out his evil plan. The movie has some incredible action scenes that are a combination of well choreographed stunts mixed with a few visual effects but this one also has some romance in it which is a nice addition to the mix. I think this movie is really where the crazy stunts really started getting taken to the next level and of course it features that one trademark scene that’ll leave you on the edge-of-your seat as Cruise puts his life on the line for the viewers. M:I-3 was a step back in the right direction after the second went off the rails just a little and it’s an emotionally charged action-thriller. Movie fanatics that have already upgraded their home entertainment centers (screens and players) to watch 4K movies are sure to enjoy the experience. Mission: Impossible 3 is now available on a 3-disc 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD).
