Movie Review: MILE 22 (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

MILE 22 was directed by Peter Berg from a screenplay by Lea Carpenter and features an outstanding cast led by Mark Wahlberg along with Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais, Ronda Rousey and John Malkovich.

James Silva and his CIA unit embark on a 22-mile gauntlet under deadly circumstances. In a visceral modern thriller from the director of Lone Survivor, Mark Wahlberg plays James Silva, an operative of the CIA’s most highly-prized and little-known unit. Silva leads a small but lethal paramilitary team on an urgent and dangerous mission. Aided by a top-secret tactical command team, Silva must transport a foreign intelligence asset (Uwais) who has vital information from an American embassy in Southeast Asia to an airfield for extraction before the enemy closes in. In a distance of 22 miles, Silva and the soldiers soon find themselves in a race against time as the city’s military, police and street gangs close in to reclaim the asset.

Mile 22 follows Overwatch, a top-secret special ops team that goes on a deadly mission into enemy territory to try and locate and extract a mysterious man with sensitive information out of the country. This elite team of highly trained men and women have a secret base that looks out for them and their every move but there’s also a Russian surveillance team watching in the shadows that nobody is aware of and their intentions isn’t revealed until the final hand is played close to the end of the movie.

The extraction team is able to pick up their target but as soon as they do, the mission becomes a battlefield for them because they have multiple groups trying to stop them in their tracks. Bullets are flying all around them and booby traps are laid out in every stop they make as they fight for their lives in this hostile warzone. Not everyone makes it out alive as Overwatch ultimately completes its mission and gets this mysterious man to the extraction point but as soon as they do a new twist is introduced that reveals who this man really is and why he’s so important.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc is red and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, I had a blast watching Mile 22 and it’s definitely Mark Wahlberg’s most exciting action movie to date as well as the bloodiest because this action-thriller is brutal and it doesn’t hold anything back. Mile 22 is unapologetically violent to the max, and as intense of a watch as it is, the movie also sneaks in a small sense of humor at times. The movie reteams director Peter Berg with actor Mark Wahlberg for a fourth time and deals with espionage and the real threat of global terrorism as well as the elite team that has go up against this kind of sinister threat. You take all of this and add several twists to the story and it turns Mile 22 into a roller coaster ride of survival. There’s a lot of insane action scenes throughout the movie that sort of plays out like a real time episode of “24” except everything is taken to an extreme level and Peter Berg captures the non-stop insanity with the multiple camera setups that were used in the filming of the movie. This isn’t the best offering from the Berg/Wahlberg duo but it is an extremely exciting action-thriller full of twists and turns until the end credits roll. Mile 22 is now available on a Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital).
