Movie Review: MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS (2-Disc Ultimate Fan Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack)

scorch trials

MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS is based on the critically acclaimed young-adult saga based on author James Dashner’s best-selling book series. The movie was directed by Wes Ball and returns Dylan O’Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee and Kaya Scodelario with Giancarlo Esposito, Rosa Salazar, Barry Pepper, Lili Taylor, Alan Tudyk, Katherine McNamara, Aidan Gillen, and Patricia Clarkson also starring.

The Scorch Trials picks right up where The Maze Runner left off and follows Thomas and his fellow Gladers who enter into a mysterious new world called the Scorch which is a desolate wasteland filled with unimaginable dangers.  The mystery about the secret organization known as WCKD deepens at every turn as the Gladers work together to try and discover more about their pasts that are all somehow linked to this organization. Upon their arrival they meet their host Janson who is working with Ava Paige who we briefly met in the first movie. It doesn’t take long for Thomas and the gang to find out that their new pal Janson is nothing more than a sinister sleaze ball who has some pretty twisted plans for all of them. They don’t stick around long enough to find out too much so they narrowly escape and flee out into the deadly Scorch.

Once the young group escapes from their sinister host, they enter into a sandy wasteland that is larger in scale and much deadlier. Not all of them make it out alive either but they move forward with Janson and his goons hot on their trail. The Gladers end up meeting a number of new allies on the outside but with each new meeting also comes more deadly obstacles, especially when it comes to the berzerker Cranks. Thomas and one of his new friends get a crash course in how to deal with these horrifying mutations that end up being really hard to take down. Ultimately, Thomas and his friends come face to face with Janson once again in an explosive finale but they also find out that one of their own has betrayed them. The finale leaves the door wide open for the third entry – The Death Cure.

Okay, The Scorch Trials is one of those kind of sequels that ends up being better than the first movie. The story was a lot of fun with more of a sci-fi element thrown in for this second outing. There’s also a horror element added in as well. With these sci-fi and horror elements added in the story, there’s also plot twists, curveballs and betrayal thrown in that keeps the viewer fully vested in the fast-paced movie. The acting was really good and all of the characters were interesting – both good and evil. You can’t help but cheer on Thomas and the Gliders on this exciting new journey that is literally nonstop action from beginning to end. There’s also new allies and villains introduced that we’ll be seeing much more of in the future. As far as the action goes, the bar has been raised in this sequel that is full of heart-stopping stunts and breathtaking visuals. There’s also the monstrous Cranks that are introduced in the sequel.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images, and the impressive list of special features. The Blu-ray and DVD discs also feature matching artwork. Inserting each disc, the menu screens were simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-def disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-def disc were really good. There’s also an exclusive, 24-page comic-book that includes two new prequel stories from BOOM! Comics – one on the character of Teresa and the other a Crank backstory.

Bottom line is, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials was a fantastic watch that exceeded all of my expectations. I was already a huge fan of the first movie and as good as it was, The Scorch Trials was bigger, better and even deadlier in every way. Wes Ball and company have delivered a really fun action adventure and this sequel took the mystery and the excitement to a whole new level. This 2-Disc Ultimate Fan Edition Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD Combo Pack released on December 15th and is definitely worth checking out. The Scorch Trials is definitely a must watch!
