Movie Review: LOGAN LUCKY (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

LOGAN LUCKY was directed by Steven Soderbergh from a screenplay by Rebecca Blunt and stars Channing TatumAdam DriverSeth MacFarlane, Riley Keough, Katie Holmes, Katherine Waterston, Dwight Yoakam, Sebastian Stan, Brian Gleeson and Jack Quaid, with Hilary Swank and Daniel Craig.

Hoping to reverse a ‘curse’ that’s hung over his family for generations, Jimmy Logan (Tatum) hatches a plan to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR’S biggest race of the year. He convinces his bartender brother Clyde (Driver) and hairdresser sister Mellie (Keough) to help him pull everything off–but first they have to break the bomb-maker Joe Bang (Craig) out of jail in broad daylight. Academy Award winner Hilary Swank plays a no-nonsense FBI agent determined to bring the Logans to justice and keep them from racing away with the loot in this high speed caper from director Steven Soderbergh.

Logan Lucky follows Jimmy Logan, a West Virginia family man who decides that he’s going to steal money from the Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Coca-Cola 600. He recruits his bartender brother Clyde and their hairdresser sister Mellie to help them pull it off. Jimmy also recruits demolition expert Joe Bang to help them break into the track’s underground vault but there’s a catch – Joe Bang is in prison. First things first, they have to come up with a plan to sneak Joe Bang out of prison without getting caught and then they move on to the race track where things end up going surprisingly smooth. Not really. They run into all kinds of obstacles and troublemakers along the way but Jimmy and the gang do end up getting the money while they dodge a couple of FBI agents who are hot on their trail. Well, kind of.

Okay, there’s so much to like about this crazy caper comedy. The story was well conceived and all of the characters were fun to follow. Watching Channing Tatum and Adam Driver plays these two goofy brothers is just something to see on its own. Nobody gives Jimmy any credit for smarts but he ends up outwitting everybody and it’s fun to watch him pull this off. I have to add that Clyde is sort of the secret weapon in Logan Lucky but I can’t ruin it for you. You’ll just have to watch to see what I mean. As quirky and silly and way over-the-top as this movie is, there’s also some exciting action plus the movie also has a lot of heart. Yeah, this isn’t just another dumb heist film because these working class people are doing this for a reason. I’m not condoning stealing money at all but you have to cheer for these small time crooks because they’re just so likable and they’re doing it for a reason. And of course there’s the Soderbergh style of filmmaking that is just so evident throughout the watch.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc is chrome and only features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, I had a blast watching Logan Lucky that’s a mixture of buddy comedy, caper comedy and good ole action all rolled into one fun movie. The story was interesting because it mashes up the sport of Nascar with a fairly well planned heist that’s orchestrated by this small group. The cast was terrific, and yeah, it’s an all-star cast that drives this crazy movie plus you’ve never seen any of them in a role like this before. Sure, some of the Southern (actually West Virginian) accents are a bit exaggerated but that’s part of the awesome Southern charm that this caper comedy possesses. Channing Tatum is originally from Cullman, Alabama so I’m sure he still has his real accent buried away deep inside. Steven Soderbergh is one of today’s greatest storytellers and Logan Lucky is another winner for the filmmaker. Logan Lucky will be available on Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD Combo Pack on November 28th and is worth checking out.
