Movie Review: LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes – Justice League: Gotham City Breakout Blu-ray Combo Pack

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes – Justice League: Gotham City Breakout was directed by Matt Peters and Mel Zwyer from a script by Jim Krieg. The voice talents include Troy Baker (Batman), Nolan North (Superman), Grey Griffin (Wonder Woman) and Khary Payton (Cyborg). Eric Bauza (Bane), John DiMaggio (Deathstroke), Tom Kenny (Penguin), Jason Spisak (Joker), Tara Strong (Harley Quinn), Vanessa Marshall (Poison Ivy) and Sarah Hyland (Batgirl). The Teen Titans are also vocally represented by Will Friedle (Nightwing), Greg Cipes (Beast Boy), Scott Menville (Robin) and Hynden Walch (Starfire) with Amy Hill as the voice of Madame Mantis.

When Batgirl and Nightwing take Batman on a trip down memory lane – literally – to visit one of the key mentors from his formative years, it’s up to the Justice League to keep Gotham City crime-free. But neither situation proves to be a “vacation” as the Bat trio encounters old nemeses on their adventure, and the Justice League discovers just how busy Batman is on a regular basis. It’s a brick-tastic battle on two fronts as Batman, Batgirl and Nightwing take on Bane and Deathstroke, while the Justice League – with some help from a few Teen Titans – fends off an assault by many of Batman’s infamous adversaries to ensure Gotham City’s safety.

Even though Batman allows Batgirl and Nightwing to take him on vacation, he never really lets his guard down so he’s never really surprised with what all happens on their adventure. Once Deathstroke reveals himself, there’s some flashbacks that takes the viewer back in time to the hero and villain’s childhood where they trained together under Madame Mantis. Bane ultimately reveals himself as the one who is really calling the shots but Batman and his team come up with a plan to ultimately defeat their enemy. In the meantime, Superman accidentally releases Gotham’s worst villains so he has to call in reinforcements. The Joker (and his spoon) leads an all-star cast of villains for a new round of chaos. It ends up being Robin who pretty much saves the day and he’s supposed to be doing his homework. Hey, duty calls!

The story for Gotham City Breakout was a lot of fun and even though it’s Batman’s show, many of the DCU superheroes arrive for a good time. Superman learns what it’s like keeping Gotham City under control and it’s no walk in the park for the Man of Steel so he has to call in reinforcements. Half of the Justice League and the Teen Titans show up for this new adventure. Batman tries to relax but he never cracks a smile or lets his guard down during the entire vacation. I continue to enjoy the LEGO-style animation for these highly popular DCU movies. The animators bring these characters to life but it’s the talented voice cast who gives these characters their attitudes and personalities. There’s action, lots of humor, cool gadgets and even a spoon!

The packaging comes with an outer shell that houses the Blu-ray and figure. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details and some images. Both discs feature movie logo with Batman and Superman. Inserting the discs, the menu screens were simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues at all with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes – Justice League: Gotham City Breakout was a lot of cheesy animated fun that showcases a much lighter side of the DCU. I enjoyed the story and all of the characters that showed up for this animated adventure. Batman gets a short break from Gotham but ends up getting into a new battle with Deathstroke and Bane. Superman learns how much responsibility it is keeping Gotham City under control when he fills in for Bats and ends up having to phone a friend or two. This all-new family friendly original movie arrives on Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD Combo Pack (w/ Nightwing LEGO Minifigure) on July 12th and is worth checking out. The kiddos will definitely get a kick out of it.
