Movie Review: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was directed by J.A. Bayona and stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard who return as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing with original cast members Jeff Goldblum and BD Wong reprising their iconic roles. The fifth installment in the franchise also stars James Cromwell as wealthy entrepreneur Benjamin Lockwood, Dr. John Hammond’s partner in creating Jurassic Park, as well as Justice Smith and Daniella Pineda as Franklin Webb and Zia Rodriguez, members of Claire’s Dinosaur Protection Group; this brilliant cast brings an extraordinary story to life as chaos erupts when Owen, Claire, and their team discover a most deadly endgame that could bring the planet back to prehistoric times. Toby Jones, Rafe Spall and Ted Levine also star.

In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom directed by J.A. Bayona and executive-produced by Jurassic titans Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow, Owen (Pratt) and Claire (Howard) return to Isla Nublar three years after the destruction of the Jurassic World theme park to rescue any remaining dinosaurs on the island from a catastrophic volcano that threatens to leave dinosaurs extinct once again. Owen is driven to save his lead raptor, Blue, while Claire makes it her mission to preserve the creatures that she has grown to deeply respect. When the lava begins to rain down, they soon discover terrifying new breeds of ferocious dinosaurs along with a conspiracy that could threaten the entire world.

The movie takes place three years after the destruction of the Jurassic World theme park and reunites Owen and Claire who return to Isla Nublar to save the remaining dinosaurs from a volcano that’s erupting. They’re joined by a few new sinister figures that have some ulterior motives with the jurassic dinos as well as a few new allies that help them fight back. Even Blue gets her time to shine again in this action-packed sequel. The movie ends up shifting from the island to an isolated mansion on the main land where the surviving dinosaurs end up being held captive. The weaponizing thing also comes back into play from the first movie and the end result is the creation of the monstrous Indoraptor that’s a combination of a Raptor and the Indominus Rex.

Something else that Owen and Claire discover is that there’s a black market auction going down while they fight against this new threat where the highest bidders win the dinosaurs and what this does is help set up for the next movie because now there are even more sinister figures that have the last of these creatures in their possession so this means that the dinos could possibly be weaponized or even cloned. Needless to say, the threat of a world wide disaster is looming. Owen and Claire also have to find a way to stop the ravenous Indoraptor and in the end they get a little help from good ol’ Blue that still shows its loyalty to Owen even though it gets a new taste at freedom in this brave new world that the last of the dinosaurs now call home.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc is black and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio. Fans will also be able to get interactive with Baby Blue on hatch day by using a special activation code.

Bottom line is, I enjoyed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and thought they did a really good job with expanding this fun universe even more. With that said, I also thought the movie was a step backwards as far as the entertainment aspect goes because it felt like something was missing. Maybe this iconic island had become such an important character all its own and now it’s been destroyed. So yeah, this movie introduces a brand new setting and location where the surviving dinosaurs end up next door to suburbia. Anyway, the story was interesting and it was great to see the return of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as well as Jeff Goldblum and BD Wong who’ve been with the franchise from the very beginning. There are more dinosaurs this time around which means even more impressive special effects that were a combination of old school practicals as well as some extremely detailed visuals. I thought J.A. Bayona did a good job bringing the story to life on screen and delivering a darker entry into the jurassic franchise and his work was complimented nicely by some beautiful cinematography that’s easily the best in the series. Personally, I think this fifth installment is the third best in the franchise following its 2015 predecessor and the 1993 classic that started it all. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will be available on a Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital) on September 18th.
