Movie Review: JUPITER ASCENDING Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD Combo Pack

Jupiter Ascending Blu-ray Box Art

JUPITER ASCENDING was written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski and stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis with Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, James D’Arcy and Tim Pigott-Smith.

This sci-fi action adventure follows Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a young woman full of dreams who goes from cleaning people’s houses to getting herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic war where she finds out that she’s actually royalty.  There’s also Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter who arrives on Earth and tracks her down to save her from a group of alien bounty hunters that have also located her.

Jupiter’s life quickly changes forever when she’s taken into space where this war between factions is going on and she ends up playing an important part in this game of space greed and manipulation. Jupiter’s genetic signature marks her as next in line for something extraordinary. This is where these three greedy and spoiled royal hopefuls come in the picture who try and charm their way and win her over so they can claim the extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos. Of course, to claim the prize, they’ll have to kill Jupiter and this is where Caine comes in who also stays on Jupiter’s mind a little too much throughout the movie. The heroic spliced alien goes through some extreme lengths to ultimately save and rescue the beautiful young earthling from the ones trying to kill her.

Okay, there’s so much good about this movie and very little bad about it but the one bad thing is the most important part of any movie and that’s the story. The movie has so much going on that the story gets a little confusing and feels rushed or lost at times. Now let’s get to the good stuff and there’s plenty. First of all these amazing worlds, aliens and ships were absolutely amazing, fascinating and breathtaking. The Wachowski’s have created a thing of beauty here that’s just a lot of fun to look at and gaze upon.

The movie is packed with some amazing CGI special effects that make up these new worlds, the alien creatures, their gadgets and weapons, and those amazing looking space ships. All of the ships were of stunning design and absolutely amazing! There’s also some very original ideas used in the movie like those neat boots that Caine wore. They’re like a combination of roller blades, rocket shoes and a skateboard that allows him to ski across the sky or space or wherever he feels like it. There’s also plenty of action scenes all through the movie. There’s also the aliens in the movie that were all created from genetic splicing of several different alien races and they all had their own unique look about them, including Channing Tatum’s character that was half dog and half human. Wardrobes always help to make a movie better and Jupiter Ascending featured some really cool looking costumes and then there was all that wonderful garb that was worn by the stunning Mila Kunis.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of extras. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were both crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were both really good. This is definitely the kind of movie that you’ll want to watch in high-def and crank up while watching!

Bottom line is, Jupiter Ascending was a pretty confusing movie the first time I watched it but after giving it a second chance, it grew on me some and I honestly enjoyed it for the most part. The weakest part of the movie is the story which should always be the most of important part of any movie but the rest of Jupiter Ascending was absolutely amazing. The Wachowski’s continue to create ambitious new adventures with their wild imaginations but so far they can’t get close to matching The Matrix that they delivered way back in 1999. Jupiter Ascending is a good movie and a lot of fun but it is not even close to being a great movie. This Combo Pack releases on June 2nd and is worth checking out.
