Movie Review: JASON BOURNE (4K Ultra HD Combo Pack)

JASON BOURNE was directed by Paul Greengrass who co-wrote the screenplay with Christopher Rouse. The film  stars Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, Riz Ahmed and Julia Stiles.

This fifth installment takes place nearly a decade since Jason Bourne’s (Matt Damon) disappearance that finds the CIA’s most lethal operative drawn out of the shadows. His only ally is his longtime friend Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) who also makes her return and locates Jason where she is able to alert him that there’s new information about two more programs that the agency has been keeping top secret. This reunion immediately becomes a deadly game of cat and mouse for the two friends because they’re being tracked. This also features new information about Jason’s mysterious past that also includes his father.

Agency head Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) and his sleazy international assassin Asset (Vincent Cassel) are determined to put a stop to Jason before he finds out too much about these programs and more about his past that also includes the both of them. There’s also Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) who works for Dewey and it doesn’t take her long to learn that something just isn’t right about what’s going on. She sort of turns face and ends up quietly helping Jason in his fight against Dewey and the agency. The big question is if Heather really is on Jason’s side or does she have her own ulterior motive?

The story for Jason Bourne was well written but simple as it marked the return of the CIA’s most lethal operative who is drawn out of the shadows. More is revealed about his mysterious past but there’s still so much we don’t know about Jason Bourne, which is also part of the fun that this action franchise offers. Matt Damon shows that he’s still got it when it comes to kicking ass and saying very few words while doing so. The rest of the cast was great where we got to see Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander’s characters offer something new and important to the story. It felt like there was more action than dialogue this time around but I’m also okay with that. There were some great choreographed fight scenes in the movie but the standout action scenes were easily the insane motorcycle chase in Athens and the destrutive car chase in Las Vegas and it was all so well done.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Both discs also feature some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio for this release. Fans will be able to experience this entire franchise like never before with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) release. This features four times the resolution of Full HD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) that delivers the brightest, most vivid and realistic color and greatest contrast.

Bottom line is, Jason Bourne was a really exciting return to the long-running franchise for actor Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass. I know there was a tireless effort getting Damon and Greengrass to return to the action-thriller franchise and they delivered an exciting new chapter in the Bourne saga. It’s not the best in the series but it’s still a fun ride. The story picks up nearly a decade later and continues the adventures of this man who is simply trying to find out more about his past. The thing is, the more he finds out, more is also revealed about the agency who made him the way he is – and it’s not good! Movie fanatics that have already upgraded their home entertainment centers (screens and players) to watch 4K movies are sure to enjoy the experience, but this is also for the high-def loyalists because there’s a Blu-ray disc included for them as well. There’s also a digital copy that you can add to your Vudu library or whatever digital platform you use. Jason Bourne makes his return when this 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) releases on December 6th and it’s worth checking out.
