Movie Review: JACK REACHER (4K Ultra HD Combo Pack)

JACK REACHER is based on the 2005 novel “One Shot” written by Lee Child. The movie was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, Jai Courtney, Werner Herzog and Robert Duvall.

Ex-military investigator Jack Reacher (TOM CRUISE) leaps off the pages of Lee Child’s bestselling novel and onto the big screen in the explosive thriller the critics are calling “taut, muscular, gruff and cool” (Peter Suderman, THE WASHINGTON TIMES).  When an unspeakable crime is committed, all evidence points to the suspect in custody who offers up a single note in defense: “GET JACK REACHER!” The law has its limits, but Reacher does not when his fight for the truth pits him against an unexpected enemy with a skill for violence and a secret to keep.

The opening scene of this 2012 action-thriller shows a sniper set up and shoot down five people in cold blood. There’s no connection between the shooter and his victims in what appears to be an unfortunate random killing spree that hits close to what we see way too much in the news these days. A wounded suspect is brought into custody and all he’s able to say is, “Get Jack Reacher.” This is when the mysterious ex-military investigator comes in and begins his own personal investigation that ends up leading him to the real killer and he also discovers that there may be a dirty cop involved as well.

What happens is, Jack Reacher befriends Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike), the beautiful defense attorney who’s taken the case and ends up getting pulled right into the middle of this deadly altercation between sides. There’s also Cash (Robert Duvall), a sharp, old marksman who ends up becoming a helpful ally in Reacher’s fight to reveal who the real killer is. Reacher ends up getting framed for another murder that’s set up by the man he’s chasing down and he goes back and forth with his elusive opponant several times that includes gun fights and car chases. It all leads to a showdown in an old quarry where he takes on the man responsible for the murders and the puppet master pulling the strings who goes by the name of The Zec (Werner Herzog).

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, an image and list of special features. The UHD disc has a black finish and features the movie logo and the Blu-ray disc has a light blue finish and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this new release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio quality. Fans will be able to experience this movie like never before with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) release. This features four times the resolution of Full HD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) that delivers the brightest, most vivid and realistic color and greatest contrast.

Bottom line is, Jack Reacher is an exciting action-thriller that’s driven by the ageless icon, Tom Cruise. I liked the interesting story that’s based on this book series and here we have this mysterious antihero enter the picture to find the real killer behind a deadly shooting spree and helping the man who’s been accused of this unthinkable crime. There’s a lot of mystery to this main character who can only be found if he wants to be found plus he’s as smart as he is tough. The movie has a great supporting cast that includes the beautiful Rosamund Pike who plays this lawyer that gets into way too deep in the dangerous case and the legendary Robert Duvall who becomes a helpful ally for the antihero. Cruise likes to take charge in all of this movies and deliver some wild action scenes and while there’s no insane, death defying “real stunts” like the Mission: Impossible movies, it still features some exciting stunts that include a well executed car chase that’s a lot of fun to watch. Sure, this is your typical Tom Cruise action-thriller but it’s still a really entertaining watch and it looks and sounds great on this new release. Movie fanatics that have already upgraded their home entertainment centers (screens and players) to watch 4K movies are sure to enjoy the experience. Jack Reacher will be available on a 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) on June 26th.
