Movie Review: Howard Lovecraft And The Undersea Kingdom (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

Howard Lovecraft And The Undersea Kingdom is based on the graphic novel series by Bruce Brown and Dwight L. MacPherson, The movie was written and directed by Sean Patrick O’Reilly and features a phenomenal voice cast that includes Kiefer O’ReillyTyler NicolChristopher Plummer, Mark Hamill, Jeffrey Combs, Ron Perlman and Doug Bradley.

For Howard, Things Are About To Get R’lyeh Crazy! Young Howard Lovecraft may have defeated the evil King Abdul Alhazred in the Frozen Kingdom, but all is not safe, not yet. There are much darker forces at work and, this time, Howard must protect his father’s journals without the assistance of his most trusted ally, Spot. Instead, Howard must recruit his own father and seek the aid of the studious Dr. Henry Armitage to use the power of the journals to rescue his best friend and family, and vanquish the mysterious forces once and for all!

Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom introduces a much more sinister threat that Howard has to go up against in this sophomore effort. This time around his mother and best pal Spot have been kidnapped by dark forces so he recruits the help of Dr. Henry Armitage and his unstable father to aid him in the rescue. Howard has to master some new spells from Dr. Armitage and this helps him go up against his new enemy where he ultimately defeats him and his undersea army and saves his mother and pet. Spot also has a growing spell in the finale and ends up tansforming into Cthulhu and we all knew that was going to happen sooner or later.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The reverse sleeve features an image from the movie. Each disc also features artwork that matches the front cover. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom was a fun continuation for this animated supernatural franchise that’s geared towards a much younger audience. The story was a lot of fun and I really think I liked this second installment more than the first one. It’s as good as the first one, how about that. Now that the characters are already developed, there’s more time to play and that’s the case here because this movie is nonstop supernatural excitement from beginning to end. The movie has its own unique look and even though it’s not my favorite style of animation, it’s still visually stunning in it’s own special kind of way. While adults continue flocking to anything related to H.P. Lovecraft, kids can enjoy their own adventures with these quirky spinoff characters and parents don’t have to worry about things ever getting to dark for their kiddos. There’s just a small element of horror so things never get too dark for Howard Lovecraft and the gang. Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom is now available on a Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Combo Pack.
