Movie Review: Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms and Blood & Iron (4K Ultra HD Combo Pack)

HELLBOY ANIMATED: SWORD OF STORMS is based on characters created by Mike Mignola. This 2006 animated adventure was directed by Phil Weinstein and Tad Stones and features the voice talents of Ron Perlman as Hellboy, Selma Blair as Liz Sherman, Doug Jones as Abe Sapien and Peri Gilpin as Kate Corrigan.

In Sword of Storms, a folklore professor becomes unwittingly possessed by the ancient Japanese demons of Thunder and Lightning. But when The Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense dispatches a team of agents to investigate, a cursed samurai sword sends Hellboy to a supernatural dimension of ghosts, monsters, and feudal mayhem. Now, while pyrokinetic Liz Sherman and fishboy Abe Sapien battle one very pissed-off dragon, a lost and cranky Hellboy must find his way home. Even if he can survive the perilous journey, how much crap does a guy have to put up with from the two most vengeful and ferocious spirits of Japanese legend?

Hellboy and the team travel to Japan to take on these two demons but Hellboy ends up getting zapped to another dimension because of this cursed sword that leaves the heroes separated. Big Red has to take on all kinds of monsters while Liz and Abe have their own wild adventure that includes a dragon. At the center of this chaos is also a supernatural possession going on. What happens is, they’re all fighting for their lives but Hellboy finally finds away to get back to his own dimension and this also vanquishes all of the demons, ghosts and monsters they’ve all been fighting against. In the end, Hellboy and the team defeat their enemies as well as figure out how to exorcise this supernatural possession that’s been the cause of this new adventure.

HELLBOY ANIMATED: BLOOD & IRON is based on characters created by Mike Mignola. This 2007 animated adventure was directed by Tad Stones and Victor Cook and features the voice talents of Ron Perlman as Hellboy, Selma Blair as Liz Sherman, Doug Jones as Abe Sapien,Peri Gilpin as Kate Corrigan and John Hurt as Professor Broom.

When Hellboy, Liz Sherman, and Abe Sapien are assigned to investigate the ghost-infested mansion of a publicity-hound billionaire, they uncover a plot to resurrect a beautiful yet monstrous vampire from Professor Bruttenholm’s past. But before they can stop her bloodbath, Hellboy will have to battle harpies, hellhounds, a giant werewolf, and even the ferocious goddess Hecate herself. How much crap does a guy have to take from a Hungarian Blood Countess before he and his surrogate father can avenge the souls of the damned? It’s going to take more than just a horde of very pissed-off demons for our heroes to see the light in this animated adventure from creative producers Guillermo Del Toro and Mike Mignola.

Hellboy and the team travel to Eastern Europe and this time Professor Bloom insists that he come along for the ride. This new mission takes them to a haunted house where they have to battle it out with vampires, witches and werewolves. So why did Professor Bloom want to come along so badly? Through flashbacks, we get to see a much younger professor going up against a female vampire who’s calling the shots so this new mission is a very personal one for the old man. While Hellboy and the gang are battling it out with these monsters, Professor Bloom goes head-to-head with his old enemy where he finally finds a way to defeat her after all these years. This latest adventure is a very personal one for Hellboy and the old professor he looks up to like a father.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The UHD disc (black stripe)  and Blu-ray disc (blue stripe) both feature some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this 4K upgrade were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio for this release. Experience four times the resolution of full HD with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, which includes Dolby Vision HDR, bringing entertainment to life through ultra-vivid picture quality. When compared to a standard picture, Dolby Vision can deliver spectacular colors never before seen on a screen, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker. The 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack also features Dolby Atmos audio mixed specifically for the home to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead.

Bottom line is, Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms and Blood & Iron were both first time watches for me and I enjoyed them for a number of reasons. First of all, the live-action cast returned to voice their characters in animated form and secondly the stories for each movie were very interesting. I also like this style of animation and the characters look great plus we get old red in his true comic book form with those goofy looking tiny legs and that big upper body. Both of these movies are dark and atmospheric, just like the live-action movies, so they’re pretty much a continuation of the action-packed adventures of Hellboy and his friends as they take on new supernatural threats. Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms and Blood & Iron will be available on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital) on April 2nd from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. These two animated adventures arrive just in time to get you ready for the big screen reboot that releases on April 12th.
