Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas was directed by Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh, with the teleplay by Thomas Meehan, Bob Martin, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and features the voice talents of Jim Parsons, Mark Hamill, Kate Micucci and Ed Asner. The score is by Matthew Sklar and Christopher Guardino, with original songs from Elf: The Musical — music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Chad Beguelin. The animated musical is based on the hit 2003 comedy and first premiered on December 16, 2014, on NBC.

Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas tells the story of Buddy the elf, and his quest to reunite with the human father he never knew existed. While Buddy’s sincerity and idealism are commonplace at the North Pole, these attributes are rejected in cynical New York City. But through song, dance, and relentless good cheer, Buddy rekindles the spirit of Christmas for the entire city.

Okay, what this animated musical does is simply retell the story we’re already familiar with but it adds a little more cheese and show tunes to it. The story still follows Buddy who leaves the North Pole and heads to the big city to meet his real father. Once Buddy enters the lives of his real family and meets a few new friends, he slowly warms up to them and begins to change their lives for the better. Where joy and happiness were once absent, have now found a place in their lives. This also changes Buddy’s father from being a Scrooge-type company “yes man” to someone who puts their family first and ultimately parts ways with his evil boss. Buddy’s happiness and cheer helps spread the Christmas spirit to everyone in the city – even to some of the ones that have been on Santa’s naughty list.

Okay, this was an interesting watch and a fun one. First of all, Elf is one of my go-to movies during the holiday season and what the creators have done here is continue on with Buddy’s story for a whole new generation to watch and enjoy. It’s as silly as the movie and has an incredible voice cast that brings these characters to life. Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas is truly an uplifting story about family, friendship, and the magic of the holiday season. This stop-motion animated holiday musical movie combines the humor and spirit of the beloved holiday film with songs from the Broadway hit Elf: The Musical to create this all-new retelling of Buddy’s heartwarming story.

The packaging comes with a slipcover. The front features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and extra listing. Both discs are plain with no artwork. Inserting each disc, the menu screens were simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality were crisp and clear. Inserting the standard-def disc, the picture and sound quality were really good.

Bottom line is, Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas ended up being a great watch that is definitely geared towards the younger audience. Kids will love it! Even though this animated special retells Buddy the elf’s story that we’re already familiar with, what it does is introduce an entire new generation to this beloved character just in time for the holiday season. To top this off there are some fantastic stop-motion animation used to bring this fun little world to life and it all looks amazing. This Blu-ray Combo Pack released on November 3rd and is definitely something the entire family can sit down and watch together.
