Movie Review: DOUBLE IMPACT (Collector’s Edition) Blu-ray

DOUBLE IMPACT was co-written and directed by Sheldon Lettich and stars Jean-Claude Van Damme who also co-wrote the screenplay, Geoffrey Lewis, Bolo Yeung, Alonna Shaw, Philip Chan and Cory Everson.

Van Damme leaps into the dual roles of Chad and Alex Wagner, twin brothers who were separated after their parents’ brutal murder. Years later, the two couldn’t be more different: Chad is a slick Beverly Hills fitness instructor, while Alex is a rough and tumble smuggler on the gritty streets of Hong Kong. But when fate throws them together again, Chad and Alex discover that there’s one thing they have in common: they’re both fighting machines! Determined to enact revenge on their parents’ killers, the martial-arts experts kick, chop and shoot all the way to an electrifying final showdown aboard a gargantuan freighter in Hong Kong harbor.

Jeane-Claude Van Damme teams up once again with director Sheldon Lettich for Double Impact. The movie follows Chad who’s living the good life in Los Angeles and runs a martial arts school with his partner Frank (Geoffrey Lewis). His twin brother Alex recruits him to help him get revenge for their father’s death many years earlier and the reluctant Chad accepts. The action goes down in Hong Kong where the two brothers not only clash with their sworn enemies but at each other.

Chad and Alex are complete opposites in how they deal with their lives and handle certain situations. Chad is more conservative and mild-mannered while Alex is an aggressive type with an extremely short temper. Chad also finds out that Alex is also the jealous type when he goes on a solo mission to save his brother’s sexy girlfriend Danielle (Alonna Shaw) from the enemy. It all comes down to a fierce battle royale when Chad and Alex go up against Moon (Bolo Yeung), Kara (Cory Everson) and the rest of Raymond Zhang’s (Philip Chan) goon squad where they finally get their revenge.

The packaging comes with a retro-cool slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and the impressive list of special features. There’s also a collectible foldout poster inside. The Blu-ray disc is flat white and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, It had been a long time since I’d watched Double Impact and I had a blast revisiting this 1991 action-thriller. These action movies all have some cheese to them and sometimes clock in a little short on plot development but Double Impact has a little bit more going for it. This is pretty much a showcase for Van Damme to show off his skills and he delivers a maximum performance because he pulls double duty this time. The movie has some exciting action scenes and stunt work with Van Damme being at the center of it all. The action star is complimented by a really good supporting cast of international players and they all delivered fine performances. The movie has received several home video releases over the years but this is the pinnacle and the best of the best. I watched MVD Rewind slowly put this one together and the final product is impressive. Double Impact follows previous JCVD actioners Black Eagle and Lionheart (both released by MVD Rewind last year) and is a must have for the avid collector and fans of old school action movies. Double Impact is now available on a Special Collector’s Editon Blu-ray.
