Movie Review: DESPICABLE ME 3 (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

DESPICABLE ME 3 was directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda and features the voice talents of Steve Carell who reprises his hilarious role as reformed criminal mastermind Gru, as well as his newly discovered twin, Dru. The all-star voice cast also features Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Jenny Slate, Dana Gaier and legendary singer and actress Julie Andrews.

The characters beloved by everyone – Gru, his wife Lucy, their three adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions provide hours of family fun in this heartwarmingly subversive comedy. Illumination, the studio that brought you Sing, The Secret Life of Pets and the Despicable Me franchise, continues the adventures of Gru and his family in Despicable Me 3. After he is fired from the Anti-Villain League for failing to take down Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), the latest evil mastermind to threaten humanity, Gru finds himself in the midst of a major identity crisis. But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother — a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin’s despicable footsteps — the former super-villain rediscovers just how good it feels to be bad.

Despicable Me 3 follows Gru’s all-new adventure where he teams up with his long-lost twin brother Dru to stop Balthazar Bratt’s evil plot and retrieve the giant diamond that was stolen. How all this plays out is Gru gets fired from the AVL but he’s still committed to being a good guy. Dru covers as a pig farmer but he’s really still a super villain in waiting. What happens is, Gru recruits his brother to help him go up against Balthazar Bratt, a former child star turned super villain who loves a good dance-off. While all of this is going on the Minions also have their own little adventure but they do find a way to help Gru what little way they can. In the end, Gru saves the day and continues to be the antihero we’ve all grown to love but Dru decides that villainy is the route he must take and the Minions go along with him.

Illumination and Universal continues their winning formula when it comes to these animated movies that just keeps on entertaining. The story for Despicable Me 3 was a good one and introduced several more awesome characters to the mix. Steve Carell pulls double duty as the voice of Gru and Dru and gives both of these characters their own unique personalities. I love Kristen Wiig in anything she shows up for and this character of hers is really finding her place in this family now. We all know Trey Parker from “South Park” and he does a fantastic job as Balthazar Bratt. This latest super villain to come along is a quirky one. He sports a flat top 80’s mullet even though he’s balding in the back. He has his own army of super bubble gum and action figure drones and he never shies away from an epic dance off. And with this dance off comes quite a few pop hits from the 80’s.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The Blu-ray and DVD discs are color coded and feature the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, even though Despicable Me 3 isn’t the strongest entry in this wonderful animated franchise, it’s still a really fun watch with some hilarious moments and I hope it’s not the last one. The story was interesting and all of these wonderful characters continue to be fun to follow. I really liked the silly family reunion between Gru and Dru. As great as Gru is, the mischievous Minions are the secret ingredient to the success of this franchise because when they show up you are guaranteed something hilarious is about to happen. This time around they go to prison, perform in a hilarious singing competition (I couldn’t understand a word), and even get to DJ a big party. Something else I really like about these movies is the unique style of animation that only Illumination can crank out. In this case, Gru’s long nose plays an important part in shaping the look of these movies. We can’t forget about the voice cast because they’re the ones who give these wonderful characters their personalities and attitudes. This latest animated collaboration from Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures will release on a Special Edition Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD Combo Pack on December 5th and is definitely worth checking out.
