Movie Review: DEEPWATER HORIZON Blu-ray Combo Pack

DEEPWATER HORIZON was directed by Peter Berg from a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Matthew Sand. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien, and Kate Hudson.

Mark Wahlberg leads an all-star cast in this unforgettably powerful film inspired by a thrilling story of real-life heroes. For the one hundred and twenty-six people aboard the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig, April 20, 2010, began like any normal day. Before day’s end, the world would bear witness to one of the greatest man-made disasters in U.S. history. Deepwater Horizon reveals the brave acts of the men and women who rose to the challenge—and risked everything to lead others to safety.

Most of us are familiar with this oil spill tragedy that happened back in 2010. What this movie does is focus more on the human element that is sometimes left out of stories like this. I thought Peter Berg did a really good job telling this story about the brave men and women who went through this tragedy, and not all of them made it out alive. The sad thing is, it could have been prevented and nobody would have died. Moving on to the cast, I really enjoyed the impressive lineup assembled for Deepwater Horizon and thought they all did an outstanding job. Mark Wahlberg plays the likable blue collar hero really well, Kurt Russell plays the wise and cautious old pro just right, and John Malkovich pulls off the unlikable corporate knowitall to near perfection.

Deepwater Horizon is a hybrid film because it’s half action-adventure and half drama. The first part of the movie is pretty much a slow burn as it focuses on character development and setting up the situation. The second half is where everything goes full throttle once the rig blows, then it’s all about survival. There’s some crazy explosions and action scenes featured and it all looks really good. The special effects and stunts were all simply amazing! Something else important to help pull off some of these scenes was the impressive cinematography. Some of the explosive scenes were as beautiful as they were disastrous and the camera captured it all nicely.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see up top and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Both discs also feature matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio for this home video release. Also, to celebrate the release of Deepwater Horizon, Lionsgate is taking film commentary to the next level with the new Deepwater Horizon VR app, now available on iOS and Android mobile platforms. Using the new immersive Deepwater Horizon VR, fans will experience, for the first time ever, the thrill of being in the same room with director Peter Berg as he dives into the critically acclaimed film Deepwater Horizon with exclusive commentary alongside editor Colby Parker Jr. Created by SubVRsive in partnership with Lionsgate, viewers will be surrounded by renderings and sketches of the various special effects used in the film, as Berg and Parker Jr. reference them.

Bottom line is, Deepwater Horizon was not only a really good action drama, but Peter Berg and company also did it in a way to pay respect and honor the ones who lost their lives. I clearly remember when this tragedy happened back in 2010 and all the news coverage it got. The main focus from the media was the widespread mess that it caused, but the fact that human lives were lost is the saddest and most important part, especially since it was all out of greed. The BP suits were more concerned about making money than putting people in danger and the ultimate price was payed here. It took a long time for them to clean up the widespread oil spill, but sadly, the human lives can never be replaced. Deepwater Horizon arrives on a Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD Combo Pack on January 10th and is worth checking out.
