Movie Review: DAYBREAKERS (4K UHD Combo Pack)

Daybreakers was written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig and stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill, Claudia Karvan, Michael Dorman, Vince Colosimo, Jay Laga’aia and Isabel Lucas. The music is composed by Christopher Gordon.

Ten years after a plague turns most of the world’s population into vampires, a critical blood shortage causes panic and gruesome mutations among the reanimated. Edward (Ethan Hawke), a vampire hematologist, tries to develop a blood substitute when he meets Lionel (Willem Dafoe) and Audrey (Claudia Karvan), two fugitive humans who claim to have a possible cure. Edward casts his lot with them in the hope of perfecting the cure before it’s too late.

Daybreakers takes place ten years after a plague turns most of the population into vampires. The plague was started by the bite of an infected vampire bat and then it spread across the globe. The movie centers around Edward Dalton (Ehtan Hawke), a vampire hematologist who works for the sinister Charles Bromley (Sam Neill), the owner of Bromley Marks which serves as the largest provider of blood for vampires. The thing is, the human race has become an endangered species and the blood supply is running low. The thing is, if vampires go too long without feeding they turn into these terrifying bat-like creatures. Edward is also a human sympathizer and has been searching for a blood substitute but his research has failed to this point.

What happens is, Edward ends up meeting Audrey Bennett (Claudia Karvan), a human rebel who inroduces him to Lionel “Elvis” Cormac (Willem Dafoe), a former vampire who was accidentally turned back into a human and he wants to share the cure with his new vampire friend. Edward takes a chance and goes through the painful process that works and changes him back. They come up with a dangerous plan to introduce this cure to the starving vampire population but they’re met with some heavy resistance by Bromley and his militarized corporation. It’s a fight for survival as Edward and his new friends find a way to get the cure started. It’s slowly able to turn the vampires back into humans and in the end Bromley gets the vicious karma he so rightfully deserves.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc features its own indivual artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this 4K release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio for this release. Experience four times the resolution of full HD with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, which includes Dolby Vision, bringing entertainment to life through ultra-vivid picture quality. When compared to a standard picture, Dolby Vision can deliver spectacular colors never before seen on a screen, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker. Additionally, the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack and Blu-ray feature Dolby Atmos immersive audio mixed specifically for the home, to place and move audio anywhere in the room.

Bottom line is, I don’t feel like Daybreakers really got the love it deserved when it first released back in 2009 for whatever reasons. The futuristic sci-fi horror thriller features an original story with a fantastic cast and lots of action. Daybreakers has an interesting concept because it reverses everything we’ve ever seen in movies and places the vampires as this overpopulated and extremely starved species with the human race serving as the near extinct food source. But there is a cure! I thought the story was really interesting and the cast did a good job with their characters. The Spierig brothers did a great job telling the story and bringing this dark world to life on screen. There’s also some impressive special effects to go along with it all. I guess my only gripe is that I wish we could have seen a few more of those terrifying bat-like creatures that the vampires turn into if they go too long without feeding. Other than that, this is a fantastic sci-fi horror thriller that’s definitely aging well plus it looks and sounds great in 4K. Daybreakers will be available on a 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital) for the first time ever on September 10th.
