Movie Review: COLD PURSUIT (4K UHD Combo Pack)

COLD PURSUIT is based on the 2014 Norwegian dark comedy In Order of Disappearance aka Kraftidioten. The movie was directed by Hans Petter Moland from a screenplay by Frank Baldwin and stars Liam Neeson, Laura Dern, Emmy Rossum, William Forsythe, Tom Jackson, Julia Jones and Tom Bateman.

COLD PURSUIT, an action thriller infused with irreverent humor, stars Liam Neeson as Nels Coxman, a family man whose quiet life with his wife (Laura Dern) is upended following the mysterious death of their son. Nels’ search for justice turns into a vengeful hunt for Viking (Tom Bateman), a drug lord he believes is connected to the death. As one by one each of Viking’s associates “disappear,” Nels goes from upstanding citizen to ice-cold vigilante, letting nothing – and no one – get in his way.

Nels Coxman is a small town snowplow driver who finds out his son has been mysteriously murdered and this sets him on a revenge-filled search for the killers. This tragedy also leaves his wife Grace (Laura Dern) in a depressed state leaving the husband-father feeling all alone. Nels quite life becomes a mission of strategic search when the grief-stricken vigilante discovers that his son was murdered by Viking, the local mobster who’s about as cold blooded and relentless as they come.

As Nels violently takes out Viking’s henchmen one by one, he also gets a little help from his brother Wingman (William Forsythe) who ends up right in the middle of this bloody dilemma and face-to-face with Viking. While all of this is going down there’s also White Bull and his tribe that ends up getting involved. White Bull is sort of a rival crime boss across town from Viking and their uneasy truce ultimately comes to a bloody ending and Nels is caught right there at the center of it but he’s right where he needs to be. In the end, Nels finally meets his son’s killer and exacts some sweet ass revenge during this turf war that turns into a battlefield.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc features some artwork that matches the front cover. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this 4K release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio for this release. Experience four times the resolution of full HD with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, which includes Dolby Vision HDR, bringing entertainment to life through ultra-vivid picture quality. When compared to a standard picture, Dolby Vision can deliver spectacular colors never before seen on a screen, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker. Additionally, the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack and Blu-ray feature Dolby Atmos audio mixed specifically for the home, to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead.

Bottom line is, Cold Pursuit is the best Liam Neeson movie to come along since 2008’s Taken. The ongoing joke about Neeson’s long line of action movies is that they’re all pretty much the same revenge-thriller (same plot) with different names but Cold Pursuit is a little different for a couple of reasons. This is a vicious revenge-thriller because the body count in this one is higher than all of Neeson’s other movies put together. There’s blood and gore too so they didn’t hold anything back when it came to the insane amount of violence. This movie is also little different from Neeson’s others because his character here is just a normal family man with no particular set of skills so the only thing that drives his vengeance is his grief. There’s also the fact that this movie has a twisted since of humor that kind of levels out the dark tone the movie would otherwise have. Liam Neeson does a really good job with this character and there’s a great supporting cast around him. There’s also William Forsythe who delivers a really likable character while Tom Bateman plays a character you really love to hate. The only problem I have with the movie is the long run time but other than that I think Hans Petter Moland directed an exciting revenge-thriller and something a little different for Neeson to sink his teeth into. Cold Pursuit is now available on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital).
