Movie Review: CLOUD ATLAS (Blu-ray+DVD+Ultraviolet Combo Pack)

From acclaimed filmmakers Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski, the powerful and inspiring epic drama CLOUD ATLAS explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future.

Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.

Cloud Atlas has an impressive cast that includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith David, David Gyasi, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant. As impressive as this list of names is, it’s the characters that they portray that is really off the charts. Each main actor portrays six different characters in the movie, all from different timelines that take place between the 19th and 23rd centuries.  I’ve watched lots of movies in my time but I had never seen anything done like this.

This is a big movie, so big there are six stories going on at the same time! Cloud Atlas takes place in a number of different time periods that eventually come together, kind of like pieces to a puzzle being put together. At the hear of these time periods is Seoul. From past, present to future we watch this place change and evolve along with its central characters and I absolutely loved New Seoul and its characters in the movie.

Something else I really liked about the movie were the amazing sets, the costumes and the crazy makeup effects that the actors wore in each time period. The makeup effects are easily the biggest standout in the movie and are so impressive, that and the amazing visual effects and breathtaking cinematography. The audio and video for the movie are also both crisp and clear.

The only thing I really didn’t like about Cloud Atlas was the beginning.  This nearly 3-hour movie starts off very slow and I can understand why some people couldn’t get into the movie but if you wait, it gets so much better and the payoff is really amazing.

Bottom line is, this Cloud Atlas (Blu-ray/DVD + UltraViolet Combo Pack) is an amazing watch and close to a masterpiece. Cloud Atlas releases on May 14th and comes highly recommended!  It’s not for everyone but it is worth a watch simply because this is a one of a kind movie!
