Movie Review: CITY SLICKERS (Collector’s Edition) Blu-ray

CITY SLICKERS was directed by Ron Underwood from a screenplay by Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz and stars Billy Crystal, Bruno Kirby, Daniel Stern, Helen Slater, Patricia Wettig, Jeffrey Tambor, Yeardley Smith, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jack Palance.

This insightful, delightful comedy about cowboys, careers and midlife crises stars Billy Crystal as thirty-nine-year-old New Yorker Mitch Robbins, who’s tired of his job and bored with his life. So he and his two best friends (Bruno Kirby and Daniel Stern) trade their briefcases for saddlebags and set out to find freedom and adventure herding cattle under the wide New Mexico sky. But what they discover instead is scorching sun, sore backsides … and more about themselves and each other than they ever thought possible. Aside from the trio of fish-out-of-water urbanites, CITY SLICKERS also starred the inimitable Jack Palance, who captured the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as leathery trail boss, Curly.

Every year, three friends take a vacation away from their wives. This year, henpecked Phil (Daniel Stern), newly married Ed (Bruno Kirby), and Mitch (Billy Crystal) — terrified of his midlife crisis — decide to reignite their masculinity by taking a supervised cattle drive across the Southwest. Under the supervision of gruff cowboy Curly (Jack Palance), the men set out on a journey that turns unexpectedly dangerous. The three men bond along the way to conquering their fear of aging.

City Slickers follows Mitch (Billy Crystal), Phil (Daniel Stern) and Ed (Bruno Kirby) who end up trading in their boring city lives for a wild west adventure on a cattle drive that’s supposed to help them get away from the struggles and drama of everyday life. Upon arrival, they meet Curly (Jack Palance), a weathered old cowboy who’s in charge of the cattle drive and he doesn’t take crap from anybody. Mitch and Curly don’t hit it off in the beginning but the old cowboy slowly warms up to the wise-cracking visitor. The three friends join some others and they get started on the cattle drive that ends up becoming a dangerous wild west adventure when tragedy strikes. Mitch, Phil and Ed and the others decide to move forward to try and get the cattle to their destination and in the process they rediscover what’s been missing in their lives and have a little fun while doing it.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features some all-new artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The reverse sleeve also features some original artwork and movie credits so you have your choice of which side you’d like to use as the front cover. The Blu-ray disc features its own individual artwork. This Shout Select release has been given an all-new 4K HD scan. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, it had been such a long time since I’d watched City Slickers and really enjoyed revisiting this comedy classic from the early 90s. The story about these three city yuppies that end up finding themselves again on this cattle drive with a little help from an old cowboy is pure entertainment. The three friends start out green and completely helpless but end up getting schooled in survival and toughness when an unexpected tragedy occurs. I thought the cast did an amazing job with their characters. Billy Crystal’s wise-cracking sense of humor is half of the magic while Jack Palance’s old school cowboy toughness is the other half. Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby do a great job as the two sidekicks who also offer up some laughs. City Slickers is pure comedy gold that’s heavy on the comedy and light on the drama plus it looks and sounds fantastic with this brand new 4K upgrade. City Slickers will be available on a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray on October 16th.
