Movie Review: BUTTER (Blu-ray+DVD Combo Pack)

BUTTER is a dark comedy that follows a butter sculpting champion who is kind of forced to step down to give others a chance to win. His wife has a hard time accepting this so she decides to pick up where he left off and she will take no prisoners. She quickly learns the craft of butter sculpting and heads off to the county fair where she goes up against several others including 10-year old Destiny, a  foster child who has just moved into town and has the natural talent for sculpting butter.

As the movie plays out, we watch how desperate the wife gets wanting to win this competition and the insane lengths she’ll go through to keep the crown. It definitely makes fun at real life because we all know somebody like this.

Getting to the amazing all-star cast; Jennifer Garner plays Laura Pickler who becomes obsessed with the local butter sculpting championship after her husband Bob (Ty Burrell) is asked to step down and he does so very quietly and agrees it’s time to give someone else a chance. Laura is fun to watch, she does some really crazy things just to try to win a butter sculpting competition. I’d never seen Jennifer Garner is a role like this and to me, she stole the show and was a blast watching. Olivia Wilde plays a raunchy stripper who also enters the butter sculpting competition, pretty much just to get under Laura’s skin and the fact that Bob owes her some money for some “previous services” performed. 10-year old Destiny (Yara Shahidi) is a foster child who moves in with Jill and Ethan (Alicia Silverstone and Rob Cordory). She is kind of accidentally introduced to the butter sculpting phenom in the town and she shows that she is a natural at it. She is cool, calm and collected while Laura is the exact opposite and then some! Then there’s Boyd (Hugh Jackman), a local car salesman and ex-boyfriend of Laura’s who gets drug into her evil plans.  Boyd is kind of an airhead who is easily influenced by Laura and her techniques.

Butter is an absolute blast and I laughed so hard at times I cried! It reminds me of other popular satires like “Best in Show” and other fan favorites. Butter, to me is funny, edgy and downright dark at times. Director Jim Field Smith did a great job with writer Jason Micallef‘s story and the ensemble cast is absolutely amazing!  In the past we’ve had politics, religion and now we get Butter!

Bottom line is, I highly recommend this Butter [Blu-ray+DVD Combo]. Check out this dark comedy when it releases on December 4th.
