Movie Review: BLOCKERS (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

BLOCKERS is the directorial debut for Kay Cannon from a screenplay by by Brian Kehoe and Jim Kehoe and stars the hysterical and over-the-top parental trio John Cena, Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz who will do anything to foil their daughters’ prom night sex pact . The film also features teenage newcomers led by rising actress, Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan, Gideon Adlon, Graham Phillips, Miles Robbins and Jimmy Bellinger. Also joining in on the fun are comedic supporting cast members Gary Cole, Gina Gershon, Hannibal Buress, Colton Dunn and June Diane Raphael.

When three parents (Cena, Mann and Barinholtz) stumble upon their daughters’ pact to lose their virginity at prom, they launch a covert one-night operation to stop the teens from sealing the deal. BLOCKERS is a gender-swapped spin on the classic teen sex comedy, filled with outrageous antics from the parents as their daughters take control of their epic prom night.

When overprotective parents, Lisa (Leslie Mann), Mitchell (John Cena) and Hunter (Ike Barinholtz) find out that their three teenage daughters, Julie (Kathryn Newton), Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan) and Sam (Gideon Adlon), are planning on having sex on prom night, they decide to try and stop it no matter what the cost. They also realize that coming up with a successful plan is a lot tougher than they thought it was going to be. Their silly misadventure puts them hot on the trail and leads them to all kinds of road blocks and obstacles in the process.

What happens is, the three bumbling parents unfortunately see some mutual friends of theirs having some seriously intense sex and accidentally make eye contact during the climax. They have a bizarre car crash that gets violently explosive. They even invade a keg party that shows what I believe to be the very first butt chugging scene in cinematic history – all thanks to John Cena’s character. As the night plays out and the girls catch on to what their parents have been up to, the parental trio of goofs find out that maybe their daughters have a little more class and brains than they gave them credit for. So, maybe everybody learned some valuable lessons during prom night?

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc is color coded disc and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Blockers ended up being another one of those raunchy, fouled-mouthed new gen comedies that’s pretty much become the box office norm over the past two decades. Think American Pie movies. This one features a lot of adult humor and crude situations that some viewers might find extremely offensive while others will see it as an absolutely silly watch. It’s kind of a coming-of-age story about these three teenage girls who decide to lose their virginity on prom night but the focus stays more on the three parents who get into all kinds of uncomfortable situations in their misadventure to stop their daughters’ deflowering no matter what the cost. I thought the cast did a great job with their characters and we have to give it up for John Cena who took one for the team in one of the most uncomfortable yet hilarious scenes in comedic cinema. If you’re looking for a few good laughs that include dick jokes and butt chugging then this movie is for you. Blockers will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital HD) on July 3rd.
