Movie Review: BETTER WATCH OUT (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

BETTER WATCH OUT was directed by Chris Peckover from a screenplay by Zack Kahn and stars Olivia Dejonge, Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Aleks Mikic, Dacre Montgomery, with Patrick Warburton and Virginia Madsen.

Holiday cheer and Home Alone get a decidedly dark spin when a babysitter must protect her charges from a terrifying home invasion. This holiday season, you may be home, but you’re not alone… In this fresh and gleefully twisted spin on home-invasion horror, babysitter Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) must defend her young charges (Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould ) when intruders break into the house one snowy night – or so she thinks.

Better Watch Out is a home invasion holiday thriller that follows Ashley who goes over to the Lerners to baby-sit their 12-year-old son Luke at Christmas time. The parents head out to party the night away and Ashley is left to deal with some unwanted intruders as her terrifyingly adventurous night slowly plays out. Ashley’s night is not only full of creepy surprises and unwanted house guests but it also includes a rising body count that features some insane carnage, blood shed and a dark sense of humor. In the end, Ashley has to outwit the intruders and find a way to survive the night as this shocking nightmare ultimately comes to a close. This is one Christmas that these people will never forget.

Okay, there was so much to like about this fantastic watch that has ended up being one of my favorite movies of the year. First of all, it should be playing in 3,000 theaters across the country because it’s that good. The story was interesting and all of the characters were so much fun to follow. The main players were the three young actors and they delivered some outstanding performances. It was also pretty cool to see Patrick Warburton and Virginia Madsen show up in some supporting roles. Their screen time is limited but what little we see of them, they make the most out of it. Most of this carnage and chaos takes place inside the home but so much goes on inside these walls and it’s all courtesy of one of the best cinematic antagonists to be introduced in recent memory. There’s also plenty of bloodshed courtesy of this entertaining intruder.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc also features it sown individual artwork. The DVD disc includes some holiday wreath artwork and the Blu-ray disc includes some ugly sweater artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, I had an absolute blast watching Better Watch Out and it’s the perfect time of year for a movie like this to be released on home video. The story was a lot of fun and the movie itself included perfect elements of horror and humor. Chris Peckover did a great job telling the story and bringing it all to life on screen and there’s also some beautiful cinematography to compliment his direction. There’s even a cool soundtrack to go along with it. Levi Miller delivers a character that the viewer will long remember after they witness this unforgettable performance by the young actor. This was my second introduction to Olivia Dejonge who plays this strong female lead/final girl who is full of surprises and quick wit when she has to counter the intruder’s every move. Better Watch Out because I think this talented young actress is the next big thing! If you’re curious about the movie, it fits right in with holiday classics like Home Alone but this one takes everything to the next level. Better Watch Out arrives on Blu-ray+DVD Combo Pack on December 5th (just in time for Christmas) and is definitely worth checking out. This delightfully demented holiday treat is destined to become a classic!
