Movie Review: Batman: Gotham By Gaslight (Blu-ray Combo Pack)

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was inspired by the landmark one-shot “Elseworlds” tale by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola. The movie was directed by Sam Liu from a script by Jim Krieg. The voice cast includes Bruce Greenwood who reprises his role as the voice of the Dark Knight, Jennifer Carpenter makes her DC Universe Movies debut as the voice of Selina Kyle, Scott Patterson as James Gordon, Anthony Head as Alfred Pennyworth, Yuri Lowenthal as Harvey Dent, John DiMaggio as Chief Bullock, William Salyers as Hugo Strange, and Grey Griffin as Sister Leslie. The cast also includes notable voice actors Tara Strong, Bob Joles, David Forseth, Chris Cox, Lincoln Melcher and Kari Wuhrer.

Batman: Gotham By Gaslight takes place at the turn of the century as America’s continued industrial revolution is to be showcased at a World’s Fair hosted by Gotham City. But while the world prepares to witness the glittery glory of Gotham’s technological advances, there is a killer loose in the city’s darkest shadows. Preying on thecity’s women, this killer is as precise as he is cruel. As Police Commissioner James Gordon tries to calm the fears of Gotham’s citizens regarding the butcher called Jack the Ripper, the masked vigilante Batman enacts his own detective work – with the help of confident, capable Selina Kyle – to stop the Ripper’s murderous spree. Witness a world in flames as the notorious serial killer’s controlled savagery meets the calculated stealth of the Dark Knight.

It’s the Bat against the Butcher! This latest DC and WB original animated feature brings the classic Elseworlds story to life. Gotham By Gaslight is a gritty adaptation of the classic Elseworlds tale that takes place in an alternate reality during the turn of the century where viscious murders are happening all over the city. Gotham by Gaslight features many familiar characters but it puts them in a new role where nobody is safe from this mysterious serial killer. Batman jumps into action and is hot on the trail of the elusive serial killer where each murder brings him one step closer to catching and unmasking the mysterious menace. In the end, Batman does finally stop Jack the Ripper from continuing on his terrifying path of bloodshed and the unmasking comes with a major shocker.

Okay, there’s a lot to like about this ambitious animated outing from DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation because this dynamic duo pretty much always gets it right and knows how to entertain the audience with their animated features. The story was fascinating because it mashes up two completely different universes. Batman goes steampunk and takes on this legendary cold-blooded killer who comes with a big twist. Familiar faces like Poison Ivy, Selina Kyle and James Gordon show up and play important parts to this unique tale that is probably the darkest we’ve seen in the DCU and it’s extremely well executed. This is also my favorite style of animation that the DCU uses. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is also for more of a mature audience because of some of its content so just be warned. It’s rated R for a reason.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. Each disc also features its own individual etched artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for the high-definition disc were crisp and clear. The picture and sound quality for the standard-definition disc were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was another really entertaining entry into the evergrowing DCU and this one takes everything about as far out of the norm as any of the previous animated features with this fascinating Elseworlds tale. The Dark Knight goes full blown steampunk here in this turn of the century animated adventure and takes on the legendary Jack the Ripper in this gritty new adventure. I know, who thought they’d ever see Batman going up against Jack the Ripper? Right! The story was really intriguing how they were able to mashup up Batman characters with this popular serial killer and the outcome was a fascinating and unique watch with a twist. Jim Krieg never disappoints as a storyteller and Sam Liu and his talented animators delivered a really cool movie experience. There’s also the voice cast who gave these interesting characters their personalities and attitudes. This isn’t my favorite DCU movie but it’s right up there close to the top for sure. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight will be available on Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD Combo Pack on February 6th and is definitely worth checking out.
