Movie Review: AMERICAN PSYCHO: UNCUT VERSION (4K Ultra HD Combo Pack)

AMERICAN PSYCHO is based on the acclaimed book by Bret Easton Ellis. The movie was directed by Mary Harron who co-wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner and stars Christian Bale, Jared Leto, and Reese Witherspoon, alongside Willem Dafoe as well as Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Samantha Mathis, Matt Ross, Bill Sage, Chloë Sevigny and Cara Seymour.

Patrick Bateman, a young, well-to-do man working on Wall Street at his father’s company, kills for no reason at all. As his life progresses, his hatred for the world becomes more and more intense.

American Psycho takes place in New York City back in 1987 and centers around Patrick Bateman, a handsome, young urban professional who lives a second life as a gruesome serial killer by night. This dark character study with a sick and twisted sense of humor follows this young man who barely keeps it together when he’s surrounded by his yuppy coworkers and even his fiance and a few others. He shows signs that he’s mentally slipping from time to time but everyone that surrounds him in his personal and business life is as self centered and egotistical as he is.

Patrick is able to vent by going out and randomly killing whoever he can find and the end result is always a gruesome mess. Sometimes he’s calculated with his murders and plans them out but other times he just goes out and finds a victim, where it can get little messy, but the crazy thing is, he doesn’t really care. Patrick does have a touch of playboy about him so he likes to sex it up and cheat on his girl when given a chance. Strangely enough, he’s also a big pop music fan and loves talking about his taste in music to his guests/victims. What happens to Patrick during the movie is a complete meltdown because he slowly looses his grip on reality and what’s real and what’s manufactured.

The packaging comes with a slipcover/o-card. These Ultra HD movies all come in black keep cases which helps them easily standout from the popular blue cases that have been around since day one. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and list of special features. The UHD disc features some artwork that matches the front cover and the Blu-ray disc features the blue stripe and a little blood splatter. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this 4K Blu-ray release were crisp and clear. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio for this release. Fans will be able to experience this movie like never before with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) release. Experience four times the resolution of full HD with 4K along with Dolby Vision HDR, which brings entertainment to life through ultravivid picture quality.  When compared to a standard picture, Dolby Vision can deliver spectacular colors never before seen on a screen, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker. The release also features Dolby Atmos audio, which puts you in the action with bigger, more encompassing sound that fills your room – even overhead – to immerse you in your entertainment.

Bottom line is, I enjoyed revisiting American Psycho because it reminded me of how unique of a psycho-thriller this wild ride of a movie really is. Not only is it well written but the movie features a dynamic cast of familiar faces that’s led by Christian Bale who delivers a batshit crazy performance that’s completely unforgettable. Hey, this top dollar serial killer loves his pop music from the 80’s doesn’t he. Other standouts are the sick and twisted dark sense of humor that movie has as well as the amount of blood. Speaking of blood, there’s some pretty creative kills throughout the movie that probably gave Dexter some inspiration. There’s a strong reason why this slasher from 2000 has built the loyal fan base that it has over the years and why Patrick Bateman has become a household name with horror aficionados. The movie looks and sounds great in this new 4K Blu-ray release so be sure to crank it up when you press play. This Uncut Version of American Psycho is now available on a 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD) and is definitely worth checking out, especially if you’ve never seen this movie before because it’s a one of a kind.
