Blu-ray Review: Just Desserts: The Making of “Creepshow”

Just Desserts: The Making of “Creepshow” was produced, edited and directed by Michael Felsher and features George A. Romero, Tom Savini, Adrienne Barbeau, Tom Atkins, Ed Harris and many more who talk about their experience in the making of this classic horror anthology. These are the terrifying stories behind the film that promised you…“The Most Fun You’ll Ever Have…BEING SCARED!”

In 1982, Author Stephen King, and Director George A. Romero collaborated on a feature-film tribute to the controversial EC comics of the 1950s. Told through five jolting tales of terror, CREEPSHOW has become a celebrated horror classic over the past three decades. With an all-star cast, and featuring groundbreaking special effects by genre legend Tom Savini, CREEPSHOW stands as a horrific and hilarious tribute to the stories that helped influence (and corrupt) a generation of writers and filmmakers. Now the tales behind the creation of this chilling masterpiece can finally be told!

I remember watching Creepshow as a little kid in the late 80’s when I stopped by my local video store and picked this movie up, took it home with me, and stuck it in the old VCR and pressed play. Remember those? This horror anthology has remained one of my personal favorites to this very day. As a matter of fact, I don’t know anybody who does not love this fun movie! It’s a horror anthology that never gets too scary and includes a fair share of humor. Creepshow is based on the classic EC comics and that’s talked about quite a bit in the doc. Everything is covered here, from conception, to the making of the feature.

What Just Desserts does for the viewer is take them even further behind the scenes where we get to see more members of this talented crew who get to talk about their experiences making this fun movie on a shoestring budget. Tricks of the trade! George A. Romero (who finally got his star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame recently) takes center stage in this doc and he’s complimented nicely with many members of the talented crew who gets to talk about their experiences making Creepshow. Tom Savini also gets lots of time here to talk about his amazing special effects that he came up with for the movie and how they pulled a lot of it off on this modest budget.

The packaging features the artwork you see up top and the back includes documentary details and some images. The Blu-ray disc also features some matching artwork. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this high-definition release were really good. I didn’t have any issues at all with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Just Desserts: The Making of “Creepshow” was a fascinating watch about the making of one of my personal favorite movies of all time. Michael Felsher did an amazing job here taking the fans behind the scenes of this classic horror anthology. I’m no stranger to Felsher and his Red Shirt Pictures that cranks out a lot of amazing extras for many horror distributors today and this doc here is a job well done! There’s lots of behind the scenes footage, SFX test reels, photographs, and over a dozen interviews. The doc is even presented in chapters that gives it this nice Creepshow look. The only thing/person really missing in this doc was Stephen King himself. Just Desserts has only been available overseas until now when Synapse Films releases this Special Edition Blu-ray on July 12th. This is a must have for any true horror fan and the Creepshow faithful.
