‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Director Jon Chu Says Cobra Commander Is Still Rex From ‘Rise Of Cobra’

I know there are lots of fans wondering about Cobra Commander and who he actually is in Jon Chu‘s upcoming G.I. JOE: RETALIATION. Head inside to check it out!

No, Joseph Gordon-Levitt isn’t behind the mask in the cool looking sequel but the character “Rex” is!  Chu is continuing the story and characters from the first movie and he explains below.

From AICN;

I don’t know where all this crazy, speculative stuff came from. We were asked the question, Lorenzo [di Bonaventura, Producer) and I at Toy Fair…

 ‘Is that the same actor’?

I was like…

‘No, its not the same actor’.

‘Is that Joseph Gordon Levitt?’

‘No, it is not!’

But it is Rex!

We are continuing that story, there is no other Cobra Commander. We can put that rumor to rest. I was waiting for this moment to finally clarify, I’m glad you asked that.

Pretty cool huh!  I like the fact it’s still “Rex”  behind the mask instead of them starting all over with the character.  At least now he looks like Cobra!

The cool looking sequel  stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Arnold Vosloo, Adrianne Palicki, D.J. Cotrona, Elodie Yung, Ray Park, RZA, Jonathan Pryce,  Byung-Hun Lee and will hit theaters on June 29th.

Synopsis:

The film will feature the G.I. Joe Team coming into a conflict with Zartan, Storm Shadow and Firefly all serving under the newly released Cobra Commander. Zartan (who is last seen in disguise as the President of the United States)frames all G.I. Joe operatives as traitors and wipes most of them out in a sneak attack. Zartan and theCommander now have all the world leaders under Cobra’s control, with warheads headed towards innocent populaces. Badly beaten, outnumbered, and outgunned the Joes make a desperate plan to expose the truth and stop Cobra from taking over the world.
