DVD Review: Veronica Mars (2019): The Complete First Season

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Veronica Mars (2019) is executive produced by Rob Thomas, Diane Ruggiero-Wright, Dan Etheridge and Kristen Bell who stars alongside Enrico Colantoni and Jason Dohring. Co-starring are Patton Oswalt, Clifton Collins Jr., Izabela Vidovic and J. K. Simmons.

Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica (Kristen Bell) is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.

Veronica and her father Keith (Enrico Colantoni) are hired by Congressman Daniel Maloof (Mido Hamada) after a bomb goes off at a local motel and kills several people. They take the case and while all of this is happening Veronica’s long-time boyfriend Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) pops the big question but she turns it down because of the bad timing. There’s also Penn Epner (Patton Oswalt), a shady pizza delivery guy and true crime enthusiast who ends up being mysteriously connected to the bombing.

On top of this, there’s also two assassins sent up from a Mexican crime boss to investigate the bombing because a family member was one of the victims. So much is happening all around the small community of Neptune and to top this off Veronica becomes worried about her father’s health. What happens is, Veronica has second thoughts about rejecting Logan’s marriage proposal so they decide to get hitched after all. Her father gets some good news from the doctor and it looks like they finally get the person behind the bombings but unfortunately the guilty figure leaves one last parting gift that tragically turns Veronica’s world upside down.

The packaging comes with a slipcase. The front features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes series details, some images and specs. There’s also an insert inside that includes a list of the episodes with short synopsis and air dates. The four DVD discs also include some etched artwork and series logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this standard-definition release were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Veronica Mars (2019): The Complete First Season was actually my first introduction to this character and her world of crime fighting and I have to admit that I kind of liked it. It wouldn’t be my go-to kind of crime drama but it’s still an entertaining watch. To me, Veronica Mars is like Nancy Drew without the supernatural element. I like the writing for the series and the characters are interesting so you care about what happens to them and there’s a lot going on. Good times and even heartache. This is definitely a character driven series and it’s characters get put into everyday situations that lots of viewers are able to relate to. I’m not sure if there will be another season because there was some closure for these characters here but if there is I’ll be checking it out.
