DVD Review: TRUTH OR DARE (2017)

TRUTH OR DARE was directed by Nick Simon from a screenplay by Thommy Hutson and Ethan Lawrence and features an ensemble cast that includes Cassie Scerbo, Luke Baines, Brytni Sarpy, Harvey Guillen, Luke Baines and Mason Dye, along with a cameo fromNightmare on Elm Street’s Heather Langenkamp. The movie first aired during Syfy’s 31 Days of Halloween in 2017.

Eight college friends head to a “Haunted Rental” in a remote town for Halloween weekend. There, they play the game rumored to have caused the deaths of seven teenagers decades earlier, Truth or Dare. And what starts out as vodka-induced fun, quickly turns serious when the dares become sickeningly dangerous and the truths threaten to tear the group apart. When players attempt to refuse the increasingly challenging tasks, they’re met with deadly consequences, quickly discovering: you must do the dare, or the dare does you.

Truth or Dare takes place at Halloween and follows this group of college friends who decide to play a game of Truth or Dare. Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? As soon as they start playing, they quickly realize that the game is playing along with them because there’s a mysterious supernatural element that’s present. One by one, each participant is forced to do some kind of unthinkable act and it always ends in some kind of horrifying death. They end up paying a visit to a lone survivor who played the game once upon a time with hopes of getting some kind of helpful advice of how to get out of the nightmare but all they find out is that the game is actually a trap and there’s really no escape. What the friends ultimately realize is that they’re all trapped playing this deadly game until there’s only one survivor.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back include movie details, some images and specs. The DVD disc is crimson and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this standard-definition release were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Truth or Dare ended up being a pretty cool horror creeper based on this game that just about all of us have played at some point in our lives. Of course, this one takes the supernatural route and puts this group of friends in a nightmarish situation they can’t escape from. The story was interesting enough and I thought the cast did a good job with their characters. There’s not much character development but it’s a horror movie so that’s not really necessary. Each friend is tasked with some kind of unthinkable dare (what, no truth?) and with that comes a lot of bloodshed. Needless to say, there’s some blood and gore to go along with these kills and in the end there’s even a little torture porn with a snip snap here and a slice dice there. We’ve gotten several movies over the past few years that shared this popular game title but I’m kind of partial to this one because it was filmed right here in my home town. Cinedigm is set to release this Syfy original on DVD on September 4th and with Halloween right around the corner the timing couldn’t be better.
