DVD Review: SLICE

SLICE was helmed and written by Austin Vesely in his feature film directorial debut and stars Zazie Beetz, Chance Bennett (aka Chance the Rapper), Rae Gray, Chris Parnell, Paul Scheer and Joe Keery.

When a slew of pizza delivery boys are slain on the job in a spooky small town, two daring survivors (Zazie Beetz and Chance the Rapper in a wild film debut) set out to catch the culprits behind the cryptic crime spree.

Slice is a bubble gum horror-comedy takes place in the small town of Kingfisher that’s full of spooky secrets. The town is populated by humans, ghosts, witches and werewolves. The opening scene sets everything up when a pizza delivery driver (played by the director) gets his throat cut. This sets up a string of mysterious pizza delivery murders leaving Dax (Chance Bennett), an elusive Chinese food, scooter-driving, werewolf, delivery driver as the prime suspect. He’s also kind of a town legend because of his past and all of this is explained as the movie plays out.

Everything that is happening centers around Perfect Pizza that’s owned by Jack (Paul Scheer) who doesn’t know that it’s built on a haunted burial ground. There’s also Astrid (Zazie Beetz) who gets thrown into the mix along with an investigative reporter and goofy two cops. As the murders continue, the mystery surrounding Perfect Pizza’s location is revealed with some sinister figures wanting it so they can open up a gateway to hell, or something like that. Anyway, Dax and his new allies have to come together to stop this sinister threat before it wipes out the entire town of Kingfisher.

The front of the packaging features the artwork you see at the top of the page and the back includes movie details, some images and specs. The DVD disc is flat grey and features the movie logo. Inserting the disc, the menu screen was simple and easy to navigate. The picture and sound quality for this standard-definition release were really good. I didn’t have any issues with the video and audio.

Bottom line is, Slice is one of those movies you want to be awesome but ends up falling short in a number of ways. That’s not to say the movie isn’t ambitious because it is with its unique concept and great cast but I don’t think they really had enough money to pull it off. Well, there’s also several gaps in the story that’ll leave you scratching your head. Anyway, the movie is a medicore feature film debut by Austin Vesely who’s directed several of Chance the Rapper’s music videos so these two were no strangers when it came to making this movie. The cast does a really good job with their fun characters and Chance the Rapper shows off his acting skills in what little screen time he’s given. There’s also Zazie Beetz who’s badass! It is a horror movie but it does have a twisted since of humor to it which does help some. There’s some cool looking makeup effects (but not enough) and a few visual effects to go along with that. The movie had a lot of potential to be something really cool and unique but it’s still worth a one time watch. Maybe? Slice will be available on DVD on January 29th.
